Quick V mount question

Do you need a special "v mount" radiatior or do you just use a standard (oem or aftermarket) rad and just mount it differently? The core part of the rad isn't the issue, I'm more asking about the mounting points and the rad cap angle. I ask because I just bought a new KOYO rad and would prefer to not have to buy a different one.

Another question: What is usually done with the stock oil cooler in a v mount setup? Is it left in the stock location? Is additional ducting required?

Thanks
Devan

When I built mine I used the holes on the side of the radiator that the stock brackets bolt onto. the cap angle isn't a big deal - just get a S4 thermostat neck and don't worry about the cap on the rad. You will need to cut and re-weld the upper hose neck.

Most people move the stock cooler forward, or just go dual side mounts, otherwise it really limits the angle at which you can tilt the radiator, which is important because it can only really go forward else it will hit the engine. I have seen it done with the stock location, but its not as ideal of a setup.

Search, BlueTII and TTT have really nice setups. Mine is a little ghetto but gets the job done. If you are doing this yourself, you should have access to at least a good bandsaw and a welder.

Is it absolutely necessary to cut and re-weld or can I just make a different upper rad hose. Is it an interference issue?

You are going to have a very awkward hose path if you don't cut the neck. With the radiator tilted backward the neck will be pointing towards the front of the car. You'll see when you mock it up. Also, I think on mine it hit my TID iirc (was planning to cut it anyway).

Thats too bad, the KOYO is such a nice piece, it'll be hard to hack it up.

Thanks for the info.

I just cut the neck off right before the bleeder with a hacksaw and had my friend put a bead right around the edge. If I ditched the setup for some reason I could probably have it welded back on. I'm not trying to scare you off, but V-mounts are all custom work and not the faint of heart. I cut up my once-expensive FMIC piping too. This is really something that needs to be done right. A hack job setup may well be worse than stock.

^my (could be more detailed) build thread. You can do this cheaply, assuming you have alot of the stuff already.
