Quick over heat problem

Not trying to **** anyone off, I did a little research and didn't find much help. Lets begin, Small problem, My car seems to over heat after awhile, Driving A few miles and my temp. Starts to climb higher after awhile, my bro said its normal for my car, Still worried. I have that overheat smell, when i stop the car, I have no leaks what so ever, But i do have one problem that i think is helping my car to overheat faster. My Automatic tranny, tends to slip out of gear, Like it will take awhile to get in gear while driving, i have to get the rpms high to get it into gear. Do yo think that maybe the reason the car tends to overheat? Any feed back? Thanks.
