quick engine removal question

is it easier to remove the engine and tranny at the same time?.......or no?

see i'm used to wroking on old chevys which have huge engine compartments compared to the 7's. is there enough room up front to pull them both at the same time? do i have to pull the oil cooler too? or do you think the engine and tranny will clear it?

any advice will be helpful

thanx, flatz

I think you just have to ask yourself, which would you rather do:

Reach all the transmission bolts while it's still in the car (which IS a pain, but not a monstrous one, especially if you have ratcheting box wrenches), or take off the exhaust, transmission mounts, drive shaft, shifter, blah blah blah...

Me, I'd go with it in the car, since I don't think it's THAT hard to put the engine back in with the transmission left in the car.

Unless you want to rebuild the transmission, while your at it...

You don't have to take the oil cooler out... but I'd go find some thin-wall wrenches while you can, since the front line is a PITA (and you can damage them fairly easily with the improper tools).

well it's not about trying to save time or whats easiest to get the engine out. i'm taking them both out anyway b/c i found a wrecked vert with 80k miles on it that has a perfect running engine and tranny vs. my engine which is blown and the tranny has 172k miles on it

i figured i'd replace em both, but i didn't know if i could them out together w/o being a huge PITA

so it'll clear the oil cooler up front? cool thats good news

thanks, flatz

Pulling them out as one is very easy.

Install takes a bit of luck to get it all to slip in.
