Question Questions of Boost

Hey, this is really starting to bother me. I've got an '89 TII with intake boost controller and Autometer boost guage. The problem is, I don't know how much boost I'm blowing and I want to find a good safe amount (at or near stock). I've had my boost guage read 11-12 psi with no fuel cut! The few times I hit fuel cut were nighttime highway races and I'm not sure what the guage read (it doesn't light up-ghetto fabulous!) So I figure I was hitting about 8.6psi at that time? Since my gauge isn't accurate, what should stock boost feel like and how should it sound. My turbo gets pretty loud and feels great when the guage reads 10psi, but there's no fuel cut and the car feels about as fast as I would expect stock. Any help would be great, just want to set boost at stock and leave it.

thanks in advance

do you have an FCD or aftermarket ECU maybe? that would prevent against fuel cut (but maybe you don't know you have one?)
