Question to SAFC owners (max afl% related)

Hi,

Let me start by saying I'm a happy guy I just installed the SAFC on my 91 NA, and the car started instantly (I bought the SAFC used).

Anyways, first thing I notices is that the insctructions SUCKS !!!

Now, the settings on the Low-Thro\Hi-Thro are on 0%.

On my first test, the car boged around 6K on first and second gear,; However the car only bogged once. To me, it seems that the SAFC was adjusting itself, for example I was monitoring AFL% and it went back to the main screen. It did the same thing while I tested the car on the highway, everytime I pushed the car more, the SAFC would go back from the AFL% screen to the monitor screen.

Now the real question is, anybody knows why I'm only seeing 11.X AFL% at idle and .X AFL% on anything above 1K rpms?

Is there any other setting besides the:
1. Sensor Type: Flap In 06 Out 06
2. Car Select: Cyl - 4 Thr - up arrow

Other than that the car seems to be running fine.

I see like 0.9 at idle. I'd guess you should see around 50% at WOT.

did you hook it up right? did you splice into the AFM ?? or cut it?

http://www.1300cc.com/howto/how2/safc.htm

if everything is at 0, there is no reason for it to bog.

you should change your low to 30 or so and your high to 80 or so. but untill you start changing the settings it doesn't matter.

is your arrow straight up?? I kinda remember it up to the right. I should add that stuff to my page

The car only bogged on the first spin, afterward ran (and still run) ok (normal). The SAFC reads 11.X% at idle, and .8 while cruising. The arrow is set to straigh up (kind of in a angle to the right),and I haven't touch the low\hi settings. Ohh and I cut AFM cables.

Thanks for the help

make sure your setting under etc. is for the right airflow meter and make sure you dont let anyone play with it!!

I brought my car to the dyno and we couldnt figure out why the car was running so rich. Then I realized the tuner put it on a hotwire system. I believe the setting for an s5 is Flapper 06 06 but dont blow your motor.

I don't understand that at all. mine never did that.

so you are in moniter mode. 1 channel? and then it goes back to what?

our are you reading the sensor voltage?? in the sensor check screen?

It goes back to the Main Menu, the one that says:
Monitor
Settings
ETC

Now, this is hard to explain but here it goes. I tested the car around the corner, mainly in first gear without going past 4.5K rpms, the car seems to be working fine. I went back home, shut off the engine, and took a shower. Keep in mind that I didn't monitor, nor check
anything on the SAFC.

So I'm all excited and decided to test the car on the highway. This time I started monitoring the AFL%, I took the first gear up to 7K rpms and the car bogged for a second but that was it, I tried to recreate the problem on first gear but I couldn't. Then I take 2nd gear up to +\- 7K rpms and the car bogged again, then again I try to recreate the problem on 2nd gear, nope I can't re create the problem.

At this point I double check the settings, and everything seems to be normal. So I take the car to the highway, while monitoring the AFL%, I noticed the readings close to 10.0% at idle, and it would go down to 0.8% on some throttle. This readings are constant in 1st and 2nd gear WOT, then 3rd gear comes, by the time the car reached 6k rpms the SAFC went from the AFL% screen back to the Main Screen:

Monitor
Settings
ETC

Nope, but I will start a datalogging to see what kind of readings I'm getting. I just double check the AFM cables connection, they are fine. I decided to reset everything and start all over again, I'll post later on today with the readings.

BTW - Thanks for the help

I already check that, and it was okay.

Thanks

Something's funny if the Super-AFC is, by itself, going back to the main menu. If you're in monitor mode, it will stay there forever until you exit out or the like.

Make sure all your power and ground connections are secure, and make sure the 2 ground wires are hooked up like they say - one closer to the ECU, one farther.

Might want to monitor the airflow meter percentage with the car on and not running, take your cone off, and have a buddy slowly push the airflow meter all the way in and out and see what the Super-AFC is reading. It should go from 0 to near 100%, and be nice and smooth.

Yeah, I know - I really need to get off my butt and move it from that crappy Freeservers site to my clubrx.org webserver. The page is WAAAAY out of date, though .

Thanks for the help guys, but after resetting the SAFC it seems to be working fine. I haven't redlined the car yet, but the highest AFL% that I've seen is like 44%. Things tha I've noticed:

AFL% with the engine off .4%
Sensor check 3.885V with the engine off
TPS .500V with the engine off (hot)
AFL% is directly correlated to the Thr %

I'll keep an eye on it, and I'll let everybody know what's going on.

Thanks for the responses

Nice you got that SAFC working now...

About the afl reading, the max. I got was 57.5%.
But it was a hot day.
I find that hot days have higher readings then cold days.

Mods:
Exhaust - Manifold, racepipe, rb presilencer, rb catback
Intake
SAFC

you need to be on 1 or 2 channel. on 3 or 4 channel you have to manual see the max by pushing up. then to the right to reset, then down to get off peak hold function.
