Question about TPS

I would like to know how to find out if my TPS is bad. I checked the resistance and adjusted it to 1k, and while I was adjusting it, the resistance jumped around a few times and when really high, then back to around 1k. . . Does this mean it is bad? I am having some idle probs too. . .
