question about stock amps

I've got an 88 vert and my questions are about the stock amps as well as the headrest speaker amp.

I've heard that the headrest speaker amps
won't work off a pre-amp signal, but use the
regular speaker signal. Is this also true for the
front and door amps?

I'm replacing my stock head unit and probably
want to drive the door/front speakers directly,
but I don't know how to get a signal to the
headrest speakers/amp unless I use the rca
outs from the headunit. If the other amps take
a pre-amp signal, can I replace the headrest
speaker amp with one of the amps I'm
removing????

Had the same problem, just last week. What I did was just use the deck I had to drive all the speakers. The front door speaker amp is on the drivers side behind the front dash speaker. Its a 4 pin plug, forget the colors, but i know that on Mazda the positives are on the snap lock part of the plug (the top) and the negative at the bottom, left side of plug is a speaker, right side of plug is a speaker. The amp is also configured for sub output to the factory 6's, so no you cant use the front door speaker amp for the headrest or the front 4's.

The headrest amp is in the rear under the spare tire cover, just directly behind the drivers seat, same plug as the other amp. (Blue plug I beleive on the top)

My 4 inch speakers were driven by the deck.

I toyed around with it, and used the preamp level into the factory DIN cord, and got everything to work like orginally, but wasnt happy with the sound quality. It sounded much better using the high power from the Pioneer DEHP-730...

To fade the output from the rear headrest speakers, I just use the fader on the Pioneer.

Other thing i added was a pair of 10's, inside the spare tire well.. Behind the front seats, firing downward in ported 1 cu/ft each. Man that was a funky looking box. Also sealed and seperated the gap/opening at the rear of the spare tire compartment from the trunk to eliminate cancellation due to bass going into the trunk and then back forward cancelling the bass (basically I knew I needed to do this when I open the trunk I had more bass, than when it was closed) Installed the small Alpine amp under the passenger seat for the subs. Also added a pair of Alpine DDD A series components in the front doors, placed tweets in door air vents, and unfortunaelty the pretty crossover in the door. Good luck, if you have further question email me at mikep28@bellsouth.net.. Also ICEMARK may have so advice too

I dont have a vert, but on a 90 GXL. The amp is located near the passenger side speaker. It sits between the deck and the speaker. If you unconnect both ends of the amp (one side goes to speaker, one goes to deck), and take out the amp. you will see those 2 plugs would plug right in. Simply plug that in and you will by pass the stock amp. That's how you get the door speaker to work on the 89+ cars

Yeha thats right on those GXL, GTU's that had door speakers and some SE's too. The amp was made into an enclosure that housed the right front speaker. They were simple speaker level input, but basically I never use a factory amp in a car unless im forced to, such as a Bose since the speakers are usually 1/2-1 ohm in them...

Thanks guys.

So Mike, there's still one thing I don't get. Do you have a 6channel deck? If I've only got a 4channels deck, am I screwed?

Nah, what I eventually did was wired the front components as front speakers of course..I had the 4" 's hooked up too, but I found this made very little difference, not to mention it was running my deck at 2 ohm left and right. So I basically did w/o the 4 inchers. I think Im gonna add me a small amp for the front speakers and replace the 4 inches with something else probally a 4 inch midrange/midbass. Gonna build the back of the dash in to make the speaker appear in a box, so I get a little more imaging from the front.

Now follow me on this one, the back speakers are actually 2 pair of speakers. Each seat has a left and a right.

I wired up the left speakers from both seats in parallel and did the same for the right side so I would have stereo imaging. I then faded the pioneer to FF + 7 had to put a great deal of the fade capability to the front, cuz the headrest speakers where just way way too loud. Id recommend wiring the left speaker from each seat in series next time, and the same for the right. This would make the effective load 8 ohms. And wouldnt have to be faded quite as far.

what size speakers?
I need to replace the speakers on:

90 GSL
what are the size and mounting depth of the speakes I need?

Front Door - 4" ? Max Depth - ?
Front Dash - 3.5" ? MaxDepth - ?
Rear - 6.5" (already replaced them)

88 Vert
Front Dash - ? Max Depth - ?
Front Door - ? Max Depth - ?

is it true the door speakers will only produce low order frequencies? if so I should not be buying full range speaker?

TIA
