question about the sport's aero-kit

I was reading up on this kit that all the sport models came with. I believe it consisted of an undertray, a front lip, 2 side pieces and the rear spoiler, sometimes called the "duckbill" spoiler. This kit lowered the Cd from .32 to .29. I was wondering if all of the pieces worked together equally or if one piece was more effective than the other? For instance, was the undertray or the rear spoiler the most effective piece? I've heard that the Honda Insight has a large undertray that lowers its Cd considerably.

i dont know what undertray your talking about, if you talking about the one that ataches to the underside of the fascia then i think they are there for better cooling. the spoiler does reduce drag, and the lip and side skirts are just for looks. i could be wrong though???

yes, I have held one before and remember it being very heavy.

sidewayz: I am referring to the aluminum undertray that bolts up directly under the oil pan. I assumed it was part of the aero-kit but maybe it's just another odd piece that some FC's came with while others didn't..

That undertray is plastic. It definatly helps keep temps down though. I know that a front plate (chin?) makes a large difference w/ downforce up front. Its like a plates that sticks out 100mm from the bumper and makes a high pressure zone above it. Helps keep airflow to the radiator, as well as downforce. I think it should be about 3 inches from the ground to make it more effective, so a lip in addition to that should work as well. =bumper, lip, plate.

Your right man, there is an aluminum piece under the oil pan. I have an 87 Sport with one, but I got off another car,,,,,, but now that I think about it the parts car I got it off of had the sport package as well. Many or all FC's may have came from the factory with this piece, but they were probably scrapped at one point seeing that mine didn't have it when I got it. Hold on to that and dont throw it away, they're hard to find.

The aluminum one, only came standard from the factory on the 86-87 Sport, the 88 GTU, and the 88 Turbo.

It should not be confused with the plastic radiator undertray that goes between the lower front bumper to around the engine.

The aluminum pan that goes at the rear of the engine cradle?

I've had two S5 TII's with that pan, must've been stolen from sport models?

Yeah, you access the oil pan drain bolt through it.

I have not seen any S5's with it, and it does not show up on the parts list for any S5 models, but if any S5 was going to get one, it would be the Turbo

I bought my 86 Sport with a brand new oil pan gasket and the previous owner didnt tighten the aluminum pan back together. Needless to say, my car became a road grater at 60mph. Unfortunately, the pan didnt not make it out alive. Wish I woulda kept it and straightened it back out
