question about popping noise and flames

ok i did the TB mod but left the dashpot in place... when i get on the gas hard i hear popping noises... the popping happens when i am high rev and engage the clutch to shift and get on the gas again... it happens during that split second... is this my car trying to throw flames? i have gutted the cat the best i could but might not have gotten all of it.. otherwise its a stock exhaust... i removed the dashpot today and it seemed to help it do this as i thought it would... any ideas?

btw: HOW exactly do you throw flames? a friend a long time ago said to rev high and then just barely touch the gas but this is not working for me... are there any other ways?

This is perfectly normal. Your car is backfiring. Mine is bone stock and I can hear it pop at high rpm shifting.

usually happens when your car is running rich, nothing to worry about except that you're wasting gas.

In order to get flames, you usually have to get rid of the ACV and other emmisions stuff. Mazda put several things on the car to keep afterburn, as they call it, from happening, so they usually need to be removed if you want flames.

I made some pretty good flames with all my emmissions equipment still on, with test pipe exhaust and some cheap fartpipes. On a old 87 SE.

hmmm, did you gut all the cats, or just the main? also, what exactly does the dashpot do?

the dashpot slows the throttle plates from snapping closed to help bac, or idle air control to slowly bring the rpms to the the correct idle, and to help from stalling

I find it funny that I have removed every piece of emissions equipment, did the full TB mod (took off everything including the dashpot), running an RB header to straight pipe to dual mufflers, ported intake manifolds, and have a TII fuel pump and I get NO flames. Haha, I'm actually kinda happy about that tho

On another note, I get popping (backfiring) too, but it's no big deal.
