purchasing a rex turbo
Ive been lookin in the local papers for a 2nd gen for over two months now and i found this 1987 turbo II with only 78k miles, Im going to go check it out in a few days and I was wondering if somone can tell me things to look out for.
Look for oil leaking out of the oil cooler
Look for oil leakng from under the oil filter
Look for excessive ooze almost as if it is being puhed out of the engine, betweer the housings. Its black and sticky.
Ask owner if it burns oil, it should burn 1 quart every 3k miles. If he says it dont burn oil, then walk away cause either theres something wrong or they just never checked the oil.
Lots of fixable electronic problems with these cars. heater control, moonroof, wiper switches, and I guess anything else. Most of the stuff can be fixed by just resoldering the circuit boards. (Cold solder joints everywhere)
When you get there, while the car is cold, pull the radiator cap on top of the engine. Have the owner start the car, and watch down the cap. if coolant pushes out of the cap then there are bad water seals in the engine. If you want to rebuild, then this is ok and can be a major price reducer.
