Punched out exhaust

Okay, so on my Tenth AE, I wanna punch out the downpipe/first cat, and I have a test pipe to replace the second cat. I was thinking of punching out the stock mufflers, but wanna get some opinions on how necessary/smart this is. Also, I'm not even sure if the stock mufflers go straight through. Opinions? Knowledge? Pics of mufflers cut in half? Thank you.

It will be WAY, WAY too loud if you "punch out" the mufflers. Of course, in order to do this you will need to cut the ends of the canister, do the punching, then weld them back on. Better to buy aftermarket mufflers. Even better, a complete aftermarket cat-back...

Well, I was told from an rx7 shop down here that most of the restriction is in the cats. Not so much the mufflers. So keeping the mufflers stock, but eliminating the other restriction, should be fine. I want to keep my car a sleeper. That's why I'm doing this. Aftermarket mufflers are out of the question.

So just replace the cats (with high flow units or a "test pipe"), but leave the mufflers alone...
