Pulsation damper replacement w/o removing UIM

Anyone replaced the PD without removing the UIM? Mine's leaking and I really would like to avoid removing all that sh$%, but if I have to... I have to. I just would like to know if I should set aside a few hours or a weekend

Yup, no way to effectively remove the PD without completely disassembling the intake assemble, removing at the least the upper and middle sections so you have clear access to the primary fuel rail and its assorted components.

Yeah, I just performed a PD fire rebuild back in December so I know what's involved. Just was wondering if anyone had any luck without removing all that crap. I'm pretty sure I can get the bad one off after removing the alternator, but was wondering about installing the new one. not much room to get the wrench on the back side of it.

Just frustrating that I'm doing this all over again.... well... at least I'm not re-snaking a new engine harness, and figuring out vac line routing this time

Guess I'll order me up a UIM gasket, set aside a weekend, try to do it without removing the UIM, and end up doing it anyway.

Or, you 'could' snag a banjo bolt to use instead of a PD. Ive been running without a PD for 3 years and havent noticed any problems from not having it....aside from the obvious lack of needing to worry if my PD is leaking

If you remove the Alternator you might have enough space, never tried it though.... It's really much easier to remove the UIM

Too tight a fit to try to get a wrench in there. There'd be no leverage at all. The only way it's coming off is with the UIM removed. Unless it's on an S4 Jspec engine; then the PD is on the secondary rail and is easy to get to.

I tried to do this on my N/A. I dropped a copper washer down one of the LIM runners trying to get the banjo bolt on. I ended up removing the UIM and the LIM and (luckily) found it in the aux port sleeve.

well... I'm an idiot. I actually was able to replace the PD (and yes, I dropped the copper washer as well). Took the alternator off, f'd around for about an hour and finally got it replaced. Jumped the fuel pump and was still able to see fuel dripping down on the top of the engine.

the hose clamp on the fitting for the front of the fuel rail was loose. Now I don't know if this was my only fuel leak, I could have sworn I saw fuel leaking from the PD earlier. But at any rate, I tightened it up, checked fuel pressure, and all is well. entirely possible my fuel leak was the hose clamp all along. Doh!

Could of been about 30 minutes if you removed the UIM

Typical UIM and IIM take off time is about 30 minutes. At most.

true, but reassembly might have taken a few days since I didn't have a gasket on hand and the two I ordered from Mazdatrix hadn't arrived yet , so I was worried I'd get it all apart, replace the PD, then have it sit for a few days waiting on the gasket. at least now I have a couple on hand for just such a scenario (you know I'll be replacing the stupid PD again!).

+1. the washer dropped down by the primary injectors, so the upper intake had to come off anyways
