Pull a an engine without a hoist?

Is it doable? Im stripping a car and dont have room for a hoist, can borrow one, but if I can get away with not doing it, I will.

My room mate and I pulled a 12a and 5 speed out of a FB with two 2x4's and a length of rope. The only shitty part of the lift was that I'm 6'5 and he's 5'8, so when he was in proper lifting position, I was basically sitting on the ground. It's not too hard, just make sure you lift with your legs.

fork lift? I think a jack stand(as in, raise car, hold engine with jack stand, take out mounts, and lower it from the bottom). I don't really know, describe your situation for others to give a better answer.

I suppose if you want to be creative you can jack the car up really high and drop the engine down with the aid of a jack and a large surface between the jack and engine (read: use a transmission jack), I am sure you will have to remove the engine mount brackets on the engine and chassis cross member and in order to do this, they will be in the way. I am not sure if anything besides those two things will be in your way, take a look underneath.

You will still be faced with trying to avoid dropping the engine as you roll it out from under the car though, I still think it's best if you use a hoist.

Haha, ok good enough for me, I either get some help, or a hoist then! I'll probably just borrow the hoist and be done with it.
Thanks guys

A typical engine hoist is less than 5 feet tall. How can you not have room? Are you stripping the car inside a cave?

Oh, I see... no room to store a hoist. Yeah, you should just borrow one from somebody with a bigger garage or no girlfriend.

it's be one thing if you've pulled a bunch of motors in your day, but since this has got to be one of the only ones you've ever done you would be well served just renting a hoist. you don't want to damage anything or get hurt.

OR just go pick up a come-a-long($30) or one of them 2 ton tie-down-straps(less the $20) from the auto store and just use a joist to hang them from. Then after your done just put it off to the side and just forget you ever got them since they are so small.

just get the hoist, much easier to do especially if you are taking the trans out with it or leaving the trans in.

I've done it with 2 guys a 4X4 and a seat belt, also done it wit a metal pipe and a serpentine belt. But those were the early college years.

Not hard at all.

Ive also done it with a come along and a beam.

your back will thank you later on in life for that, I lifted a transmission into my first car off the ground, if I knew then that little back pain I had would turn into ruptured disks and last a lifetime I would obviously have rented whatever tool I needed to do the job properly.

Lifting out just an engine wouldn't be that big of a deal with 2 people of average strength, but I wouldn't try it with a transmission attached. When I pulled my engine and trans, I just rented a hoist for $40 for 24 hours.

2 Shoelaces and a piece of chewing gum, and you're good to go.

But really, just rent a hoist. There will be far less cursing if it's doing all the lifting instead of you.

I bought an ATv winch for 50 bucks and mounted it to the rafters in my home garage. Succuessfully lifted and installed 4 or 5 motors with ease

You can always just drop the engine and transmission out by just unbolting the subframe (4 large bolts + the 4 sway bar bolts + the 8 nuts holding the shocks) and just drop the entire assembly onto the ground with the aid of a jack, then you can roll that **** around all day.
