proper oil cooler flush?

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
if the oil and oil filter is regularly changed, there should be little need to flush one out.
If you think there is a need you may wish to remove the thermostat bolt/valve on it and check if there is any sludge. A lack of sludge would indicate no need to flush the cooler.

i took the thermostat out and ran cleaner through it as best i could w/ mine. i think the piston in the thermostat has to be rigged or something to actually do a good "flush"

I send mine t a FAA certified repair facility and have the flush performed. It is Hot flushed for 24 hours in flushing solution (I believe Vetrol) and then the fins are straightened and the unit is pressure tested, The final step is the unit is alonized to prevent corrosion.
