Project FC drift car. Photos inside!

Ok well here we are, Our shop aquired a FC rolling chassis for totally free from a friend. After we took our boss/owner to Formula D in Atlanta, he decided to fund a project car for him, and us to drive at events.

So far we have just stripped the car completely, started Spot welding the chassis(about 1/4 complete) Started cleaning away the floor coating today, and ordered a few parts.

We plan on filling the frame rails and A pillars with chassis foam. Adding a SCCA compliant roll cage, completely seam welding every possible seam. Polyurethane bushings through out. Zeal suspension, Cusco or Kaaz 2-way LSD. Supernow! race kit for the added angle, and also we're gonna do the spindel mod to relocate the outer tie rod. The usual aftermarket body parts, 5 lug swap and a nice wheels tire package down the road. Still a little undecided on a motor as of now. Its either gonna be an LS1/T56, or a SR20det swap. Either way this should be a fun car.

Heres a few pics.

Welded on casters make moving it easy.

Free wheels we aquired from the Boss' daughters totalled car.

Air Craft stripper works pretty darn good, Dry ice is too expensive here

Aww, looks like my S14 is taking a back burner to the FC project. Im broke

PS: sorry about the shitty pics. I dunno what was up with the camera

Oh HAHAHA, Before we stripped it all down. We got bored one day and put my friends works on just one side of the car to see how they looked. And we never took em off. So it had factorys on one side and Work/Azenis on the other.

Keep it a rotary. It's stu[id as hell to make an RX-7 drift car without one. put a monster rotary motor in it.

Price is going to be a major factory on this. We are looking for the most bang for the buck pretty much. Im not too familiar with rotories, nor have I even bothered to research em. The boss is pretty Set on V8 power. His car, His money, He rights my checks

i thought stitch welds were supposed to be longer than that. very cool though

did you just do the rear suspension tower area or the whole body?

hell yea! If you've gt the money and time to bother with an ls1 swap and the rest of the works go monster port a 13bt 2 rotor or drom in a third rotar and call it 787b "mini me." You could even add cool vanity plates that says stuff like 3rtrDRFT or Dorito3 or WNKLSDRM. LOL. PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPlease don't convert. I'll pay you a million dollars not to convert.

Its either gonna be an LS1/T56, or a SR20det swap.
:-(

i think a bridged and turbo'd rotary would be the ****! V8's are rarely crowd pleaser's in drifting....

yeah true, less displacement = more crowd pleasing in drift seems like. did you guys see that formula d in atlanta where the AE86 went up againts the mopar viper? i think the 86 should have won.... i'm not a big fan of drift, but that was really cool to see.

i would like to see a rotary as well in it, but from what i know about drifting(which isnt a lot at all) you want a motor with good mid range torque and hp........and as we all know a rotary is high rpm power/torque. Especially a BP. maybe im wrong about the reasoning, but oh well. Good luck on the car!

If you go with a boinger, stick with the LS1, you will be disappointed with the SR20.

Its looks like a pretty nice project, good luck with it.

i agree, ls1 over sr20 ANY day

a lot less to worry about as far as keeping it reliable and making incredible power
and think of that tire breaking torque

if you wont go rotary, go SBC!

We just had a Fromula D drift event in Houston. The SR20det powered FD kept the hood closed, as if they knew the rotary crowd would not have been pleased. The other 2 rotary powered FD's had most of anyones attention.

But to each his own.

SR20DET>LS1 in a drift car. he isn't drag racing so a super LIGHT super powerful sr20det would completely kick ***. not to mention turbo cars are a big part of drifting, V8's aren't. And for those of you who say that the sr20 would be a dissapointement, i know someone who is making 400+ hp with an sr20 on an s14 thats easily under 2500 pounds. its total drift pwnage.

Interesting project.... unlikely it'll get anywhere but should be fun up to the point you start breaking things... a lot.

I think everyone is kinda missing the point on the engine... LS1 swap = **** for drifting. Rotary with gigantic turbo = **** for drifting.

So it really doesn't matter... the ls1 will be more reliable but break more of your drivetrain....

Not the way I'd do an FC drift car but I'm not the one with money so good luck and have fun but be safe! Just remember you'll be breaking lots of stuff... rims not excluded btw... so being tight on money isn't the best thing to start with heh. And the extra turning angle and all that stuff really isn't all that necessary... I used to think the turning angle of the tires was the problem in the FC that causes it to be spin happy once it gets out, but it's really not... the problem is just that auto toe out crap and the rear end always feels heavier top-ended so momentum loves to bring around. I think a big improvement would be lightening the hatch.... possibly the trunk area, not all that metal is needed.. heh.

FYI, WalMart here sells dry ice, and it will be cheaper and safer than stripper.

uhm, sr20 w/ a turbo and fmic is in no way going to be some miracle weight loss problem over an aluminum block pushrod v8..........

and isnt huge clumps of torque what you want for drifting? a v8 would rip the tires apart before the turbo even had time to spool on a sr

Totally with you on that one. I have yet to see an sr20 anything impress me in the slightest way. Well I take that back 1 in a magazine. Other than that they’re slow and will take way more money then a LS1 to do 50% of the same work.

NOPR... *sigh*
