the last 6 digits of the VIN tell you what your car's production number of your model year is

for example if your last 6 digits were 500001 yours would be the first one of that model year, while 555599 would be amoung the last of your model year

As Icemark mentioned, producton number is the last 6 digits of your VIN.

The first number designate what year, and the last 5 designate actual production number.

The 1986 and early 1987 models are a little different.
