product report: Tokico shocks

I just installed a set of non-adjustable Tokico shocks on my '87 NA, front and rear. The rears had been totally shot, and during high-speed cornering the back of the car would hop sideways whenever I hit a bump.

I'm very happy with the results. The ride is firm but not outrageously harsh, and the handling is much crisper, especially during high-speed sweepers on freeway on-ramps, for example.

I was replacing the auto-adjusting shocks on my GSL, and was too cheap to buy the auto-adjusting OEM replacements (which, by the way, are cheaper at Mazdatrix than from a dealer -- even a Web dealer -- but still close to $200 a pop).

But I'm pleased with the Tokicos. Also, installation is a fairly easy DIY job, if you have the right tools (ie good selection of half-inch socket wrenches), and you need to rent a McPherson strut compressor.

Best price I found was from CarParts.com, which now seems to be owned by J.C. Whitney, so I wonder if it's going to go downhill. With a discount coupon, fronts were about $100 each, rears about $60 each. Cheaper than Mazdatrix.

glad to hear you like those shocks.. i opted for the kyb's instead of them because of the price..

gotta love adjustable shocks.. i think the kyb are just as good..

are u using the stock springs or did you opt for a better spring?

i have had good luck with the eibach but would like more constancy in the rate around turns..

Glad to hear it, I have Tokicos on my '84 and am very pleased wih them, although they tend to "bounce" over certain pavement on the hiways.

I have been considering going with the KYB's lately as opposed to the other options (I like the idea of having adjustable), but how often do you really adjust them?

I fully intend to get linear rate too, although I imagine the pro-rate's still feel pretty decent.

Thanks

i honestly dont adjust them often.. right now they are set at about middle dampening. if im feeling saucy or racing stuff ill set em up high for no rebound.. if im cruising on the freeway ill set them really low.. i like a little bit of ruffness to the ride and i think the struts set to the lowest makes it too lumpy..
