Unhappy problems with gas throttle

hi, i'm new here so please excuse my sudden outbreak...

i currently own a 1991 metallic blue rx 7 NA coupe and i'm having some trouble with it...actually most of the problems are minor and i live with it like the swaying idle because it's not a very big problem...even if it pretty much shakes the entire car...(i hope it isn't a problem)...i have 131k miles...but my biggest problem now is that whenever i step on the gas even moderately, the entire engine feels like it's riding with no power....and when i'm going at 50 mph with the clutch pedal released...that actually decelerates me. the higher i travel in the gears, the less i can actually step on the gas before the power is gone. on first gear, i can step about a quarter way before it starts this odd mode....in second, i have to only slightly step on the gas and then it starts going into this mode...in third and fourth i have to basically just use my foot weight (not the weight of entire leg) before it starts doing this....basically...if i can do the gas pedaling just right....it would take me about 50 seconds to go from 0-60mph.....that's pretty bad...after a redlight all the cars next to me just zoom by on the start and i try to keep up but they just pass me.....i mean the regular crap cars like a stock honda civic with 5 people in them....and they're not even trying to race....i've searched for this problem on the net and the closest thing i found was that 3800 rpm hesitation which apparently mostly happens on the third gen...but mine doesn't happen at 3800 rpm...it starts whenever i step on the gas past a certain point....definitely no more than 1/4 way...
funny thing is that if i put it on neutral or step on the clutch all the way and then step on the gas....the engine revs all the way....most of the time....sometimes if i step on it more than half way on neutral....it completely loses power and stalls even when i'm still stepping on the gas!.....any thoughts?

o yea and this happened to me before....i took it to a mechanic who mostly didn't know anything about rotaries and said it was due to something caught in the air mass sensor...i paid him 200 bucks for his services and took it for a spin....worked fine...until i got home and restarted the car...problem rose again...then the problem went away after about 4 more restarts..once a day for 4 days...and it didn't happen again until 2 days ago....i'm still having trouble with it...but the strange thing is that sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't...mostly it does however at this point.....thanks for any comments!

Did you try adjusting the TPS?

Seeing as how its a 91 and you have the electonic oil metering pump, or metering oil pump, whichever, then it could be that your getting a failure of that omp, which in turn makes the car go into a failsafe mode i.e. undrivable except to get to the house. Try reading this site http://home.rmci.net/panther/ecu_codes.htm and see if you have a code for the mop, metering oil pump.

Throttle Position Sensor -- check out www.fc3s.org --> how to's --> FSM (factory service manual). Download the sections you need, there's some excellent info in there. It will tell you how to troubleshoot things like this to some extent, as well as how to adjust things like the TPS.

Does it hold a good idle? Is the check engine light coming on - and if so what are the error codes your mechanic pulled?

The TPS will usually cause backfire, bogging down, car stalls on hills, etc..

The MAF (mass airflow) will cause horrible idle, bogging down, etc if it's unplugged or bad.

A failing/failed OMP (oil metering pump) will cause your car not to rev over a certain RPM - regardless of gear.

usually the idle sways back and forth in any rpm....and switches varies between low 400s rpm and upto almost 2000 rpm....this isn't the initial start warm up the fcs do....sometimes it stays at almost 2000 and sometimes it falls to near 500 and starts swaying a little there...the mechanic i went to was a total idiot when it comes to rotary and i think he didn't even bother looking at many places and still charged me alot.....i asked him to check compression of the rotors and he said he got 100psi on all four of them...is that good? also i know the rotary engines are supposed to burn oil....i heard about 1 quart for every 1000 miles about....but even after almost 2000 miles the oil level is at full.....does this mean that something is wrong? and i don't really have money to take it to a mechanic so i would really like to try and solve this on my own if i can....hmmmm........also that reminds me....i bought a k&n fuel injection kit that fits 86s to 88s fcs...apparently the gaskets are different between the 86s to 88s and the 89s to 91s...so i had to sort of tape it with the gasket to make it fit.....will this cause a problem...although it isn't completely vacuum leak proof....it is enough to get a good seal....should i change it back to the stock air filter?
