Is there any sort of production date record for these things? I saw one place where someone cited a specific month of build, but I can't figure out where that figure came from...

I've seen several different places that will tell you what year, I want to know what month. It must be available to some degree somewhere. "Build date" and similar terms are, not surprisingly, unsuccessful.

there are a few ways to date the car. the first is dinner and a movie....

i kid, i kid.

there is a month/year on the drivers door jamb sticker. or you could pm me the vin and i can run the warranty history in Mazda's computer, i'll get a month/day/year. or you can go archeological, compared to an American car, the Rx7's are all the same, but Mazda did make some little changes here and there.

just a couple of examples. there were a couple of revisions to the location of the radiator cap(s) and overflow bottles, so if you had the early or late setup... or they had some new seat upholstery patterns in 88.

on the American car vs Mazda front, Mazda used the same alternator belt from at least 1979 to 1988, and they used 1 supplier, and even the printing on the belt stays the same on the replacement parts until the early 2000's, by contrast Ford lists 18 different belts for a 1994 pickup.

There's a body code sticker on the DS door itself, but nothing on the jamb... I looked all over for stickers and plates like that, but came up empty handed. PM sent.

So... It turns out Mazda has an online chat help thing on their site. The (presumedly) lovely associate got me the following information:

Build date: 5/16/86

...And that's it. I'm told records were purged prior to 1990. At least I got that information though. Mine's pretty late in the cycle. I was kind of hoping for an early one to keep my streak going, but oh well.

Not sure what your streak entails but far as I can tell, in the FC world the only significant factor is "turbo or not".
No one pays extra (or even passively envies) a particular build date or VIN number.

I have only owned one car newer than me since college. This one could have gone either way, and it's my junior by 6 months or so. Streak broken.

Inspected, plated, got the last bit of kit from the seller, and now it's time to start working on the thing... Should probably wrap this party up and move it on over to a build thread for whatever building I do on this thing.
