This car is a bit of a weird one. Every single part of the exterior is indeed Series 5 (including the moldings), but it has a complete Series 4 engine, drivetrain, electrics and interior (except for the Series 5 steering wheel). Strange as it sounds, I believe this is how the car came from the factory. I have heard before of manufacturers producing “hybrids†during the changeover between models to use up surplus parts, and I believe that’s what this is.
At first I thought someone had done a very thorough conversion, but this seemed like a strange and expensive thing to do to what was basically a stock car. When I started looking for the telltale signs of this, I couldn’t find any. Three things in particular are the fog lights, the taillights and the hi-stop light. The fog lights and their centre console switch are connected up to an unmodified factory wiring loom, which wouldn’t exist on a Series 4; the steel panel behind the taillights has not had any alterations made to it, which are required to fit Series 5 tails into a Series 4; and no JDM Series 4’s had hi-stop lights, and mine not only has one (so it’s a Series 5 boot lid), but again it’s connected to factory wiring.
This is how the car came from Japan, so its mysterious history is pretty much impossible to trace. So for now I’ll stick to my hybrid theory (no Linkin Park pun intended), because I just can’t believe someone would go to so much trouble and expense just have a Series 5 look-a-like.
