possible purchase, but sounds fishy...

OK so I read all the faqs and what not about buying an rx7 and I checked one out today. I'm a little concerned about it though and wanted to get some other peoples opinion before making a decision. I'll give you what the guy gave me.

He said he had an 86 GXL for sale with a swapped motor. The orginal motor blew with its previous owner after some high school kids "cut his oil lines" and he drove it home. No oil + rotary = bad obviously. So the guy bought the car from the kid and towed it home to swap the engine. He put it in and drove it for only 5 miles. I asked why he was selling and he said he just doesn't fit well enough in the rx7 (6'1" 220lbs). He removed the OMP and blocked ports 5 and 6 and apparently removed the power steering. When I asked who removed the OMP he said he did because he only runs Premix on the engine. He also asked me if I ran it hard on the test drive to get a good feel of it, I said no because it was on empty and I didn't want to run out of gas on the short drive in the country. He assures me he ran the hell out of it and it runs very strong. There was no stutter at 4k and it felt fine running through every gear (although second sounds like the syncro is going out). The car is a mess inside and outside although the body and paint is in fair condition. A lot of what he is telling me just doesn't seem to add up though,

should I pass on this or do you guys think it would be a steal at a decent price? Just looking for your opinion, if this is the wrong area/forum/place/anything feel free to punch me in the face call me a n00b and lock up the thread tighter than alcatraz.

Sounds like a typical life of a rotary vehicle. What 'doesnt' add up?

well he says he drove it for 5 miles then decided it wasn't a car for him. How has he been running premix (and he said it like he's been doing it for a long time) if he's only driven it that little. And how exactly has he "run the hell out of it" and why is the gas tank empty. The other prob is that he said it had 114k on it before the swap. I checked the guage and it read 228k. When I asked him about it he says "oh I might have put in the wrong cluster", there was a spare in the back but it read 137k on it. Also he talked about the rx7 being too small and uncomfortable but he had another one he had swapped a v8 (ugh) into and was going to continue working on.

If you are that concerned about it, just move on and look for one that is in better shape, and not owned by a retard. A 86-88 non-turbo is the most common and cheapest FC, Im sure you wont have a problem finding a nice one in your price range.

Hah, sounds like a car someones desperatly trying to get rid of, and for all of the work he's mentioned to have done (removing PS/omp/etc), I seriously doubt he only drove it 5 miles. Running premix isn't too big a deal, and running an rx7 to empty is pretty easy to do, but it'd require more than 5 miles! Unless he drives with one foot on the brake and has the accelerator floored, I don't know. Kind of does sound fishy now.

i'm selling mine shortly and most people on the forum know i'm not fishy at all. well, maybe a tad, but i'm not sheisty. i'll tell you everything about the car whether you ask or not. i don't like selling stuff and not having a happy buyer. sorry, but i have a conscious.
if you're interested in a 91 non-turbo with not-quite 6000 miles on rebuild (almost 180,000 on chassis), and looking to spend almost $3000, PM me so i can send you a long list of mods, pros and cons of the car.

sigh that's what I thought. Also the "basic" vin check states it was originally a turbo but it doesn't have a turbo hood and the old engine was NA also. Oh well. And thanks for the offer Casio but I'm shooting for even lower than 3k for the car.

most RX7 owners are previous RX owners, he probably meant he has premixed before, 2 stroke motorcycles also use premix. maybe he didn't like how he fit in the car so he is selling it, as for the kids cutting his oilo lines, he is probably a newb and didn't realize that the oil lines on these cars can burst at will, mine did while pulling out of a parking lot and left 4 quarts of oil on the street..

Walk away...
I'm like 6'1" aqnd 250lbs., and I fit just fine.
Minor annoyances is that you don't quite fit in the stock seats, but that should not be that much of a big deal.

I dunno what "blocking the 5 and 6 ports" means to you, but if you take this literally, this is bullshit.
Maybe "opened the 6ports manually"?

I would ask to put some gas in the tank and then take the car around and rip it up...
If they decline, run away...
