Poping sound on deceleration (new rebuild) I searched

I did some searching.. but nothing stood out; someone said they had no TPS, another said hole in the exshaust. Neither of these is a issue with this car.

What happens is I hold a steady 2-3k RPMs in neutral, let off the gas, and I get a poping type noise 4-7 pops. The motor is brand new and not at all broken in yet, I just don't want to continue to break the motor in if this is the sign of running lean, or some other problem. The motor is street ported, but right now the intake and exshaust is stock. I need to break this thing in a few hundred miles so I can smog it and put all my toys on the car ... any ideas? Or am I just paraniod? I have adjusted the TPS, and the timing the best I could for now.

Thx,

Robert

Popping noise from the exhaust, like afterburn? or a different popping noise?

Well, im not too sure. I don't know what afterburn poping sounds like. I Can Rev my N/A up to 7k+ and let dead off the gas and I don't hear anything abnormal, but this car makes a poping noise

betcha it's just afterburn.... (where does the sound "come" from? In front of you or behind you? (right underneath you...))

I *think* it seems to come from the exhaust (tail pipes) but i'm not to sure. Say it is afterburn? How do I correct that, or diagnose if it is afterburn?

You can't fix afterburn. Some cars got it, some don't. If it sounds like somebody's making popcorn in your exhaust, that's afterburn. It's not really bad for your car, just unspent fuel hitting hot exhaust. Does this happen when the car's still warming up? or even when it's cold?

I think just when its warmed up .. I will have to confirm that tommorow though, its nice and warm right now. It kinda sounds popcorn'ish though now you mention it. There has GOTTA be a fix? I mean they didn't sell these things off the showroom floor poping like that. I will replace what needs replacing, somthing has got to cause this. ... ???

The fix(as far as I know) is a haltech. My TII had it, you'll get used to it. =D Especially since you're running a ported motor, and assuming it's afterburn, I don't think there's an easy way out...

Dude, it's a turbo rotary, not a toyota camry. It's gonna make some noise. They run really rich until theyre broken in...you get some raw fuel escaping until the compression comes up. Give it 1500 miles until you start adjusting and replacing. You need to do final tps and idle adjustments after that anyway...

Damn! you mean I spent all this time and money and its still not a Toyota?

Okay, I just wanted to make sure its safe to drive it like that ... sounds like i'm okay. I didnt want to drive it alot this weekend to break it in if somthing is not right. I guess I will proceed as planned. Thx for all the input fellas.

P.S. this IS my first rotary rebuild, and I did the rebuild myself.. I didn't buy it rebuilt, so I am just a little paraniod. I'm a perfectionist, so that doesn't help matters. Also, its the first Turbo I have ever owned, but it's my 3rd Rx-7.

Its probably nothing... what you could check though is your dashpot... if your dashpot out of adjustment your car will pop like crazy...

Do you still have the ACV ???? I have seen that not working correctly cause the problem of poping on NA cars.

porting?

Did you do the porting yourself? Mazdatrix templates? Tell us about the experience.

There's an anti-afterburn vavle you can check (I think the procedure's in the FSM.)

It's strange (to me) that you're getting a *bunch* of pops. I have afterburn on my NA and she just pops once.

I have zero turbo experience, though...

Ya, I ported it myself. They wanted $400 at a local shop to port it, so I said Fug that took the $400 and got myself a 25 gallon 6HP Air compressor and Dye Grinder with carbide bits with the money instead. I got the tempolates from Racing Beat, and went to town, it was quite easy .. and went flawlessly. I saved $400 and gained all the Air **** at the same time, well worth it.

Ya, I still have the ACV. I went to DMV today and got a 30 day permit to drive it. As long as you guys think it's *okay* to drive it with the popping, I am going to put some miles on it this weekend, and see if it goes away, if not I will try to determine what is causing it. I'm pumped though .. I got insurance on it now, and 30 days to break it in and get it smogged... wooohoo! look out for my AE all you N. Cali peeps.

check ur plug wires... and for holes in the exhaust... my car does the same crap at idle and when it goes from 1500-down to 1000 rpm

i know it does it because the car is not so quiet and it does have the stock pre cats and cat and stock mufflers and piping.. so it has to have a hole somewhere causing that crap to happen.. i hate it
