Okay at the risk of sounding like a moron I am having some problems trying to replace a blown strut..

Okay I have the strut off of the car and am trying to remove the top nut but the friggin thing spins the WHOLE SHAFT..

I can't figure out how to get the nut off to take apart the strut with the whole shaft turning..

HELP!!!

 

clamp the rod of the strut with vice grips

 

thanks.. ended up having to go to a shop with an impact wrench and they came right off
