please help.....ignition problem

I guess Ill start off with introducing myself as a diehard mustang guy. Imight get flamed in here for saying that but the truth is i love all cars just happen to own a few mustangs.

I have a 86 non turbo rx7 that im working on for a friend. He got the car in a non running condition with a bad motor. He had the motor rebuilt and him and a friend re-installed the motor in the car. That was 6 months ago and the car still hasnt been started. Ive done a search on here to see if there have been posts about my specific problem but have found none. The car has an igniton problem. I have checked the leading and trailing coils for the proper resistance and they both check out good along with the crank angle sensor. I recently replaced the ignition switch as another friend said that it could be that but wasnt.

So hears whats been going on with it. If i attempt to start the car with the key, i get very eratic spark. When i say eratic i mean sometimes it will and sometimes it wont. The spark would be there for maybe 2 pulses when i first started cranking it and then stop and would spark maybe 1 more time as i let off the ignition. So far I havent been able to find anything that would cause this on the wiring schematics in my haynes manual of the car. One thing I did notice and or try is that if i spin the gear at the bottom of the crank angle sensor by hand, i get a good straong spark from all plugs. I also get a good strong spark to all plugs if I run a wire directly to the solenoid on the starter. I was originally questioning the ecu but I was thinking that since i get spark by jumping the starter that the ecu might not be the issue here.

Im going insane trying to figure out whats going on here so i would greatly appreciate any tips or suggestions that anyone can offer me.

thanks in advance

steve
