pilot and throw bearing...
ok so today after i finally got my car to pass smog i start hearing a weird noise comming from under my car. my pilot bearing is already going and its whining like crazy...then right before a touge run i stop at a local shell to wait for other friends to fill up and right when i stop i felt a thud in my car. next thing i know i couldnt shift into any gear. so i tuned off my car and turned it back on and it was real stiff into gears. my friend noticed me freaking in my seven so he walked over and he helped me check it out and said im gonna have to replace my pilot and throw bearing on my transmision...
how can i help prevent these kind of things from happening often with my transmision? is there any special fluids that help keep bearings from going? i only ask because all my friends say mazda's are notorious for pilot and throw bearing problems...is this true?

I've had a '89 TII since new and with 192,000 miles I've replaced the clutch assembly, T/O bearing and pilot bearing once at 155,000 miles along with the engine. Actually the disc and bearings weren't bad, but the plate had lost it's strength and under boost the clutch would slip, so they were replaced with factory parts.
I guess a pilot bearing could be damaged during installation, and if the T/O bearing was riding on the PP or if someone kept their foot on the pedal at idle, the parts could be in for a short life.
