Pics of my new ride + questions
Ok, questions first.
- When I step on the brakes the lights dim at night. Ground problem?
- A couple times today it died on me when I pushed the clutch in and came to a stop. Afterwords I put gas in the car (it was nearly empty) and it seemed to go away. Is that a common thing with these cars to do that when they are almost empty?
- My seatbelt light likes to say on sometimes, even though I always have it on. Another ground problem or something else?
Ok, on to the pics!

if you look close or pay attention to any car, the lights will dim when you hit the brakes. i have an 03 s10 and it does it. no big deal. unless they dim a whole lot. it should just kind of "blip" a little. as for the dying out part. could be a number of things

As soon as I can figure out this idle thing we'll be ok.

Well my 7's lights use to dim allot but didn't hurt the idle. Once I swaped in an fd alternator the dimming was almost gone. Then I added my sound system and now the dimming is because of the grounding.

I had that same problem with the lights dimming and the car dying when pressing the brakes. It was solved by changing two things on my rex (actually 3 things): The battery (if it isnt good), the battery terminals, and the alternator.
My battery was old and crappy and my battery terminals were very corroded. Thus, while running my car at night with all of the lights on and the radio on, when I brake while coming to a stop the lights would dim and the car would stall. It stalled b/c it wasnt getting enough juice from the battery and the alternator was going so it was barely recharging the battery. Look at your voltage. My voltage would flicker in between 10v-12v (that should have been a big indicator)

Well, the battery looks fairly new and the voltage guage in the dash is reading good. Alternator maybe? I noticed that after I drove the car around for about an hour, it would stop doing the idle drop, but would idle at or around 1,100rpm.

Ok, got a problem. Went to get in the car after school tonight and it wouldn't start. I ran the tank kinda low (right above empty), so we thought that maybe it needed gas. Put in a couple gallons and it still didn't want to start. The teachers at my school (automotive classes) think that the fuel pump decided to take a dump. Is the RX-7 pump loud enough to hear it prime up when you turn the key to the "on" position? They think it's the pump because they can't hear it, and seems like the car isn't getting the fuel it needs. The car was having a problem with stalling when I came to a stop. Think a bad fuel pump would cause that?
Also, I decided to change the plugs tonight, and noticed while switching them out that the last person to put plugs in it screwed them up. Instead of the required leading and trailing plugs, the car had 4 leading plugs in it. I made sure I fixed that right quick. Car idled alot better after I put in the new plugs.

If you have been able to hear the fuel pump while driving, and it's gotten progressively louder, I would say fuel pump. But you should have been able to hear it, it would sound like a turbine engine just spinning and spinning, faster and faster, until you no longer get fuel. It would be because the fins on the pump are just worn and gone.
Remember to start with the cheapest stuff first and go from there, that way you don't spend 150 bucks on something to find out it was a fuse.

damn looks exactly like mine when it came. except my s4 tailights were scuffed and sanded all white and ugly. interior is clean too. +1 i painted my moldings and put on s5 tails.
oh btw, how do i take off the shifter for my s4? is there a lock nut in the shifter or is it just because it hasn't been taking off in a long time its hard to screw off?? anybody know?

You have a VERY clean car, really nice! The diming is most likely the alternator, it could be going bad, or check your battery cables, (to starter and to ground) they could be bad, old or corroded, and not conducting good. Oh, dont let your fuel tank get to empty you can ruin an Rx-7 that way especially if you completely run out of gas. The shutting off when coming to a stop, it used to happen to my jeep cherokee, it ended up being the CAS, you might wanna check that out. and im not to sure about the seatbelt light... could be a ground problem.

How did you end up getting it started again? Cause if it started up right after new plugs, you could be dealing with leaking fuel injectors. If that is the case, you can always just take out the fuses that control the fuel system if it won't start again, crank it over for a few seconds, replace, and fire it up. And if it is the case, for long term you can either take the injectors out and get them cleaned, or buy a pressure bleed off kit from mazdatrix: http://mazdatrix.com/c-bleed.htm
