pics of my 1990 black GTUs.....
Keep it stock! We made the mistake of preparing the car for SCCA Solo2/ProSolo competition in a mildly-prepared class (STS2), and while we won two national series races (one National Tour and one ProSolo), it pained me too much to risk hurting the car or having to roll the fenders or anything.
I would post photos, but they are way too big :-)

So we went back to E-Stock with the car, all new Mazda bushings (instead of urethane/delrin) and mounts, put the stock steering wheel and seats back in it. The only thing that did not go back on the car was the dealer-installed A/C system. We kept the rear seats ('cause the chicks dig it!). Minor clearcoat damage from required race decals, but the car needs a new clearcoat anyway.....with testing and just a larger front sway bar, stock springs, and KYB AGX's (nothing special), the car is VERY well balanced, easy to drive on the street, and autocrossable enough for us to be running it at Nationals in Kansas this year. I drove it first with "old" parts on it (with 179K miles and all original shocks/bushings), and it was still fast.....it is light years better now with all new Mazda parts. Try that FIRST, if you still don't like it, then change.
Hindsight is 20/20, I wish I had just replaced all of the parts with new stock Mazda pieces. I can only suggest you do the same!
Long live the GTUs!!

Don't call him a n00b, damn it. Play nicely. He's new, and not everyone knows everything like you cocky bastards.
The sunroof is generally left out of a car for rigidity purposes. Less twisting of the unibody through corners. They also aren't that light.
My Eclipse had a sunroof and that thing would twist like hell and cause the sunroof to creak! I had an idea of reinforcements for the sunroof, two rectangular bars welded on the inside at the front and back of the sunroof opening (Welding the ends of the bars to the roofline above the doors, obviously).
KICK *** GTUs by the way! I want those wheels soooooooooooooooooo badly!

No more thread hijacking, geesh.
sounds like GTU's are the best 2nd gens to mod!
so why does everyone want to keep them stock?
as has been said before, they are not a collectors car, they are a sports car!
take advantage of the great package that you have and make it a quick street machine!!!!

You are better off buying a base model and modding it.

depends on what your modding it for..... in most cases, a turbo II is by far a better choice.... the gtus may be lighter, but the t2 has far better power...and less expensive to enhanse the power...... handling.... thats sceptical... the gtus IS lighter, but not enough to make a big difference.... put the same aftermarket suspension on a t2 and on a gtus, and most people wouldnt be able to notice the weight difference.....
the main reasoning for everyone loving gtus' is because of their rarity! here in the states they could be compared to the efini 4 in japan.... very rare fc's! hell, i still get tingly when i see a 10th ann.!
IMO the only thing better than a GTUs is a enfini.
b/c stock vs. stock I am pretty sure a gtus > TII.
but yea, if you are looking to build a hp car a TII is where your money is at.
but if you are a die hard FC guy, a gtus is it.

The only way a GTUs 'stock for stock' is better than a TII is as a novelty item. If you're going to molest it, it's about as light a platform as you can get except for the Sport and the S4 GTU. If only it came original with a damn turbo!
