PD and fuel leak

I removed my pulsation damper and took off the plastic cap, indeed the screw fell right out. how far should I tighten it when I put it back in? Also the injectors it was connected to (the secondaries, right?) were a mess. they looked all worn out, the insides where the fuel goes in were wide like a loose... whatever.. anyway that would explain why my car would be running rich, smelling like fuel in the engine bay, and causing my crappier than normal fuel consumption yeah? also the lines that hook-up to the injectors are pretty old. cracking when i move 'em and such, think I'll replace all of that. with 160k on the engine, I am saving for a Pineapple engine, thats a main reason I'm tearing into my engine. I've learned a lot, but only a little in terms of rotary knowledge. Anyway what do you guys think about my issue?

First of all just screwing it in will do nothing. I wouldn't trust that **** for a day on my car. Get a new one or bypass it if you wish. The injectors on that rail are the PRIMARIES. Smell of fuel in the engine bay is NO GOOD very dangerous. My advice is drop everything and fix it ASAP. Don't drive the car AT ALL. Get new fuel lines, injectors and a PD or banjo bolt if you wish to bypass it.

Don't let your car melt down because you were lazy and tried to just screw the thing back in.

It is almost impossible to put the screw back in a S4 PD without the proper test tools.

Just putting it back in an indiscriminate depth can result in poor idling, but that is very unlikely. It is more common to have fuel problems at a set RPM instead. Furthermore it is very very common for someone to put the screw in too far and have it rip the membrain, or not far enough and have the PD rip from too much movement.

Just replace the PD. The S4 PD is pretty cheap, (compaired to a S5 or S6 PD) and there is rumor that Mazda has phased in a newer version using a much stronger membrain (although I have not personally seen it yet).

I do not recommend Teds suggestion of replacing the PD with a Banjo bolt however, as there are questions left unanswered about fuel delivery and how not having the PD influences (positive or negitively) it.
