Passing smog without airpump/acv?

I wonder if this is possible. I checked out a very clean RX7 locally... had a very nicely made TID/cold air intake ... i was pretty impressed... however, i'm rather curious as to how he's passing smog because his acv was blocked off, there was no airpump, but he had a cat.

Weird eh? So is it possible?

if he's got an aftermarket (NON-STOCK) cat then it's possible
but I don't see how he'd pass the visual? don't they check for things like that?

then again, they don't really know what to look for, so maybe not.

but on stock cat, which requires air injection, I don't see it being very likely.

Perhaps he replaces what is needed at smog time.

it won't pass without an airpump. he probably sticks it back on for the test. you need both a cat and an airpump to pass.

could you just run a smaller belt driven airpump directly to the Cat, without using the ACV?

Actually buddy I just bought one today. $20 off a low mileage motor. Should be on its way by now.

I think I'm going to disassemble it, clean it up professionally, make sure everything is functional and then replace the one that I have. Maybe even polish it LOL.

But I'd prefer no emissions except the cat. I hate that goddamn bulky uglyass air pump!!! It would give me SOOO much more room around the turbo. After seeing that guy's setup yesterday, his engine looks so damn clean without emissions. Only 4 vacuum lines, wastegate, profec a, boost sensor, compressor outlet nipple.... Man it looked so mint Bastard had a RB catback too :P

Besure to get a new Anti afterburner Valve (poppet valve) prior to Installation. They are Inexpensive and will make a big difference as to how effective the ACV runs.

Do you happen to have a part number? Where is the valve located?

I don't have the part number but It sits underneath the Manifold. B'n this and the ACV. It's a disk with a weird apparatus facing Inside the Manifold. When I cared for a functionable ACV, I bought the Manifold Check Valve for less than $10can.

I can't really comment on that. B'c my conversion doesn't Include the presence of ABS and I have all the Manifolds off the car all shined up and pretty. But In this case, I have a block off Kit on It's way. So no ACV nor Manifold Check Valve for me.

I'm pretty sure you could still take It off w/o the annoyance of the ABS?

yes. the j-spec ones are smaller. that's my plan this summer. I don't think the stock one will fit with teh TID mod. run it stright to the cat for testing. just don't leave it like that for more then a day.

Fingers lives in Ontario Canada. Ontario isn't as tight *** as vancouver and definitly not like LA where the Etest facilities are run by the state with cameras monitoring every move.

However i do applaud fingers in trying to keep the earth clean and liveable.

Kudos!

With a setup like that, I doubt that his CAT will last very long. He might as well not have it.

Scott is correct, I did the same thing last year when I needed to pass emissions. I had already junked the egr, and acv. I simply put back on the airpump and ran a hose from the airpump straight into the cat. It actually runs a lot cleaner this way since air is constantly going to the cat.
