OK on my 89 vert n/a I turned the headlights on the other night and only the drivers side came up...

I turned them on and off over and over and just the drivers side..

I went ot the crank under the car with the headlights on if I crank the motor it will auto lift and stay up.. when I turn the lights off it will go down but when I turn them on again only the drivers will go up...

what would cause the passenger side not to work with the switch but to work with the crank

Bad motor, bad switch... probably the motor/wiring.

 

humm thats what I was thinking. I wonder if I could have bumped something in there when I was pulling out the air box etc

 

There are contacts inside the motor housing that basically "tell" the motor to go up or down.

 

I had the same problem my 88. I took the cover off the motor and found a lot of rust inside. Replace the motor and it will solve your problems.
