part 2 of my quest

lmao, this just gets better and better. The more things you change, the more they stay the same.

At this point, right now, I hate my car.

Problem : Still a high idle

Nzconvertible was right, ****, he always is, when he mentioned that a high idle can confuse the computer and cause it to surge. This is becuase UNMETERED air that the cpu does not compensate for, enters the engine, raising the idle and causing surging in some cases.

Things that I did

-TPS adjusted to perfect
-Timing right on the nose!
-RTV'd the intake gasket seals (about half of them)
-Replaced thermostat
-Got correct rad cap

The thermostat works like a charm, and I have no more coolant leaks really anymore. I sealed up the T2 housing water jackets with jb weld this time and that did the trick.

First off, I replaced the exhaust manifold gasket cause it was smoking from that area. There is still smoke, but I think its becuase of the paint that I put on it, I'll have to wait a while before I jump to conclusions. Its also still ******* loud from that area! wth? the only thing that I can think of is that the DP gasket is not on good enough and the exhaust is leaking from there.

Second, my idle went from 2000rpm to 1500 now, so I did something right. I adjusted the timing (so damn easy ) and marked up the pully marks with the light/needle. As soon as I did this, the surging stopped, it idled steady at 1500rpm, so I was happy. HOWEVER, as soon as I turned off my lights and the idle went back up ever so slightly, the surging came back, but now the surge was once every 20 seconds, instead of 2.
This made it pretty clear, find all vac leaks, find solution to idle issues, its incredibly important.

Third, im leaking coolant from the rad, it needs to be replaced! weee, the fun never stops.

SO in all,

-Idle is still at 1500rpm
-Exhaust leak somewhere on the manifold or downpipe, not sure how im going to find it...
-Radiator, under pressure, starts steaming on the left hand side quite a bit, like alot, so its fucked.

That about sums up my problems for the engine..
Im still shooting a little white smoke, but I'll worry about that later.

ugh, all I can think of is to spray some carb cleaner around the intake, and find out where the **** its leaking..

any suggestions, shoot em on up here!

thx

Taking a couple days off my car before I get crazy.

Some people recommend starting fluid over carb cleaner but both have always worked for me. Just be careful not to spray too much or it might ignite if the part you are spraying is hot enough. Just shoot small bursts into a localized area with the straw attached to the nozzle to help narrow it down. When you hear the engine surge try and narrow it down even more and then if a slow continuous stream of carb cleaner/starter fluid smooths out the idle you've got it.

Replace that radiator and good luck.

I will take that advice, thanks!
Thursday will be a new day, I will pinpoint this goddamn leak!

Any ideas on pinpointing the exhaust leak? its loud, and well smoke is just coming from everywhere it seems. Like its not alot of smoke, but defenitly enoughe to confuse the hell out of you. Im thinking of taking off the downpipe completley, getting gaskets, maybe two for each end to secure any leaking, and tighten that bitch up real good. what do you think?

Im pretty sure its the downpipe at least...

Another thing too, is that the DP is 3 freakin inches! honestly, I don't think its matting up with the stock manifold properly.. maybe thats the problem. Previous owner installed it, but for an NA, 3" doesn't make a difference over 2.5.. im gonna look for one on RB..
