I am coming to alaska on a commercial fishing trip to earn money for the sole purpose of making my car a 20b monster. i am going to make it showroom quality (or so i hope) and go the whole 9 years. when i come up to alaska after i'm done with college in duluth you should let me see how your car looks in person .
And yes my old n/a will be a turbo 20b monster. what a little sleeper. well untill i get the bodykit anyway. all is good in the land of matt. so far my budget for my car is roughly 30k and will prolly be higer after i impress tons of people on my fishing trip.
sombody BUMP UP MY POST FOR MY CAR FOR MORE IDEAS!

Can you go into more detail as far as what color the car was before, what you had to use/do to get the car ready to paint. What type of air compressor you had and spray gun did you use?

Uh, the car looks good before, when you bought it, but I can't see the after shots. So I'll assume it looks good. I have to get the rust off my car and sand the hell out of it. Should I do anything special when sanding the car down?

ryan is right. 95% of the job is sanding, blocking, wet sanding, buffing...repeat about 1000 more times. patience and the willingness to do it RIGHT is key. DONT take any shortcuts.
hey ryan, dont tell me all you wore was that little mask when you shot the car?!?!! when i deal with that toxic paint i put on my "space suit" which has a full head mask with it's own line feed to a separate air compressor source. kinda expensive but much more safe and worth it!!!!
also did you find using a pearl coat hard to work with?

compressor tank. - i used craftsman 150psi/33 gallon.
craftsman airgun..
wet sand papers. 150-for those big scratches
400 for getting rid of the cloar coat.
use only if not gonna take off all paint..
2000 grit.. inbetween coats sanding
sandable primer- use catalized
a resperator-a must
some household dish washing soap
masking- use masking tape(duh), and a **** load of newspapers..lol.. cheapo
wax and grease remover--.. this will be your last step before actualli painting the car. this removes light finger prints and grease that you might have not noticed taht was there.. please dont skip this step.. wait for at least several hours. better off over night.. , you wouldnt want water on the car.., make sure everything is dry..
now for the funn part.. shoot the car with your choice paint, in a side to side pattern with a 1 sec intervals..whats out for drips.. if this occurs.. finish the rest of the car and wait till its dry. give it about an hour., then dry sand it with 400 until smothened..then proceed. re paint..
and for the clearcoat its almost the same as the base paint.. except for the mist is way more amplified.. ohh trust me guys, youll know when you do it yourself.. almost zero visability.. coating your car 2-3 coats is essential. , due to uv light your paint will get dull. so make sure you do good job on the coats.. for an extensive wet glossy look..
onlly coat twice then sand make sure you dont snd all the way to the base..then wipe excess with gease and wax remover. and then recoat..

Does anyone have a more in-depth article on how to do body work and paint?
Or is there a good book on painting?
And for a first time painter, is it worth the time and money, or should I have it done by a "pro"?

Looks good.
One step I would add for all those attempting this/ Use a product called POLYCRACKER before you start sanding. This removes all traces of silicones and polyglycoat on your car.

Your paint looked great before, now it's just plain breathtaking.
I wsa I had the tools and space to paint my own car :-\
Oh well, I'm selling it and going for an S5.
Do you have any pictures of the engine bay?
Did you paint under the rubstrips and then install them and paint them, or just paint overtop?
I think it would be kinda cool to paint the black hatch part body color
