Painting My 7

I've been meaning to paint my car for a while now and I'm looking for some opinions.

I don't want my car to be a moneypit cause it isn't a car I really want to put all the money into(Unless it was a turbo). I feel it isn't worth the money. I want a FD, Supra or 300. But anyways for the time being I need mine painted. It's already the stock sunshine red and it's going to be a different shade of red. MY concern is should I put base clear or enamel. I was told you can get enamel to look really shiny and could be a nice look and could save lots of $$$. I've gotten many quotes and some of them want to put rock guard underneath and in the wheel wells. Is it a good idea?

Just looking for some feedback.

Thanks

I'm looking to do the same thing in the next week or so. I do have a turbo though, and I'm looking to do the clear coat and everything. I'd be interested in what anyone else has to say about it.

I was going to go base clear too and would look better in the end but I'm not looking to totally go ***** out with this car. If yours a T2 then I would.

I use PPG products, with the exception of my high build primer; which is a Evercoat product. For solid colors have the shop shoot a single stage polyurethane. For metallics go base coat clearcoat. Unless you KNOW what you are talking about do not try to second guess the shop and tell them what to shoot. If this was my car and MY money I would:

Take clear digital pics of the car.
take a Sharpie marker and circle all the dents and dings you want repaired.
Take more pics of all the areas you have circled.
Make sure your estimate from the shop says to repair all dents and dings shown in the photos. Give the shop a set and you keep a set.
Only give the shop 30-40% down.
Pic up the car only:
When you have time to go over it thoroughly and the weather is bright and sunny. Look at it inside under lights and outside under natural light.
Pay the shop only WHEN YOU ARE HPPY AND SATISFIED.

Good Luck! John
