It was a spray paint I bought from a local auto paint shop, the brand is R-M.

I used Duplicolor paint I got from the autoparts store. It's kicked *** on my wheels so far.

Prep is %90 of the equation.

Wash with soap and water then lighty sand your wheels to give the paint a perfect surface to adhere to.

Yeah I've had nothing but good experiences with Duplicolor.

Besides the fact that I don't like those rims, the paint job itself looks nice.

I want to do the same thing, except instead of all black, I want to leave the outermost lip or whatever chrome or the stock rim color.

I'd just tape off the lip if you were going to do that, wouldn't be too hard.

Mindspin, that looks really good for a rattle can job.

Yep, I'll be painting my rims this weekend as well. Anything to make the phone dials less noticable.

Yeah, really easy actually, haven't really got around to it.

The only thing I think that can be a problem with all black wheels is that it kind of looks like the spare tire. The paint does look good on the wheels I must say, especially without using a spray gun. No runs!

Yea it was a very simple process. Take the wheel off the car, spray it down with whatever cleaner you want (I used a pretty rough brush to get them really clean), once you scrub/wash them, rinse them off. I then used 400 grit wet sand paper and went over the wheel twice. You can very easy tell how smooth they get when you go over with the paper. Once thats done, rinse again and let dry, then paint.

Here is a work in progress pic:

nice looking, now it needs to sit lower

i have a set of wheels i've spray painted, and people will try to make fun of you. but i take about a week of sanding, primering, and paint. brake dust makes regular spray paint look darker after a while and its hard to wash off, if you use rustolium they come clean nicely

I too have learned not to under estimate the importance of good prep work.

Slow: do you mean use rustolium for primer, or actually use it to paint your wheels? I ask because my mom used it to paint some metal lawn furniture, and it became brittle and started chipping/flaking off after not too long. Also, did you use any clear coat/gloss?

I spray painted my wheels over a year ago and they've held up quite well aside from some small nicks due to some retards at the tire shop. I used a good automotive filling primer which went on pretty thick, then a few coats of the Duplicolor wheel paint over that and let them sit in the sun for a few hours.

NICE. Now does anyone have pictures of the same type of paint job, but rather on stock TII wheels? Preferably ones with the seven spoke rather than nine, just for a better reference?

When I got mine, the previous owner did the stock GXL wheels in black, doesn't look half bad until I get new wheels.

holy shiznit ur rex is nice. you should take the rear fender reflectors off another rx7 cuz they are red, and use em to replace ur yellow ones on ur front fenders. and if you dont use ur brights, smoke the ftp lenses black and holy jezus. just a suggestion, i know this is besides the topic but i had to comment it, its a beauty.
