Aaron's setup makes my pants tight.... Very industrial storage tank-esque.

Have you put ducting around your FMIC? It relly made a difference with mine.I had also added baffels that are the same shape as my bumper that go on each side of the FMIC. That forces the air through it and does not allow it to escape through the headlight compartments.

Also a rad pannel.

Are there any mounting plates or anything for the 86 overflow? If I need too, can I just buy a new one from Mazdatrix or so?

Okay, out of 4 pics posted, one was made into a recovery tank. I take It their Is not a recovery tank (with proper vented top) available In aluminum, for example? Thanks for the breakdown TitaniumTT. Also, I apoligize for not getting back to you on the guages. I had already placed my order on some new GReddy ones.

I have a Speedmachine carbon fiber panel. I plan on re-doing my ducting using aluminum sheets and heavy duty aluminum tape. Previously, the only way I was able to reduce water temps was to use two bottles of Redline's Watterwetter, which helped tremendously. My oil temps remained through the roof which made me look Into an auxillary fan for my oil cooler. I didn't ending up using It since I scrapped my old 7. But this one might need It.

I went with an FB overflow tank: mounted it between the radiator and the IC pipes without it touching anything. and teh braket it comes with can be removed and relocated elsewhere if I want to.

My next issue to tackle is the oil cooler and the lack of ambient air and higher oil temps due to FMIC. I'm contemplating doing the MazdaComp oil cooler relocation but I don't want to.

yeah, I do. The Mazda Competition Manual I have comes with diagrams and specs on how to make the oil cooler relocation work among the part numbers, modifications and diagrams for other crap. I just gotta get around to hosting it somewhere.

I can't remember where I got it but I snagged it along with the Kenichi Yamamoto Rotary Engine Book (both reprints, 1971 and 1981). Good reading.

TitaniumTT:

Naw, some off brand strut-tower bar I bought years ago. I think it's supposed to be really cool and lightweight because it has a HUGE "R" on it so

Gotcha - thanks... I wanted to use an adjustable FD strut tower bar and build the strut tops and the legs back to the firewal but for some frickin reason not one FD owner would drop a tape measure across it to see if it would even fit..... so I built my own from scratch. I ALMOST got a little pissed there so thanks

btw - love the new sig

well do any FD owners HAVE TOOLS???

*sigh* sorry, I saw my opportunity and I seized it!

I like the new sig too, except for that damn [i]!!!! No matter what I do it won't stay as a capital letter. I gave up on it. I'll be adding to it as the year goes by and then I'll have a vote for Rotary fan of the year, like the '07 RX7FOTY.

I like the shape and size of the FB water tank but the hose and cap were a tad different than the FC hose and cap. I cut the FC hose ( a tad too long) and just forced the cap shut. It fit nicely, opens and closes easily after a few times and now I can continue to modify the front bumper.

Nothing hasn't been done since. A summit catalogue (Issue) came In the mail today, by coincidence...I'm looking Into a Moroso one or I might just go with what I originally wanted to do which Is to use a fan small enough to mount on the cooler.

Btw, Interesting to see the FB overflow tank being used.

mmmmmmm Moroso. One of these days I need to get up to them. They're right up the road from me. They've got a nice billet one that has a siphon tube to pick up the coolant from the bottom & a drain which is nice

I should mention that I'm not entirely happy with my overflow tank. Several times I have come back to the car and found a large puddle of coolant underneath. It seems that if I park the car a bit hot (right after I get off the highway, or shut it off just before the fan was about to come on) the cooling system heat soaks, expands considerably and overflows the recovery bottle. Setting the turbo timer for a few minutes and then powering up the car so the fan runs if it gets hot is the temporary solution (kind of like the FD running the fan after it's shut off). But it's clear that I will need a larger bottle.

So does your/moroso's overflow tank serve any other purpose besides that of a stock one?

That one - no. Now if you plumbed an expansion tank in with the cooling system, that would be completely different. Think FD AST

yeah, I was trying to figure out if it worked like the AST but wasn't sure since it didn't have the same fittings as your post earlier.

No it does't. An AST or expansion tank needs three fittings and a pressure cap.
Fitting 1) Inlet - from the pressure side of the T-stat and the highest point on the cooling system pre AST/Expansion tank. If you were to use a stock FC waterpump housing I would take the filler cap off the neck on the t-stat neck and make an adapter the plug that off than tap a 1/4" NPT fitting on there with a 1/4" hose barb. Of course this is S4 style. This should catch all the air bubbles and send them to the expansion tank.
Fitting 2) Bottom - bigger - 10 is what I used, plumbed into the lower rad hose/neck. I'm actually pluming it into the heatercore return line which is also -10. Than just to be a show off I welded a -10bung where the barb once lived

The third is a traditional overflow after the pressure cap.

This is all theory on the FC though but if I were to do it to an FC waterpump housing.... that's exactely how I would do it.

I've dug In abit deeper today...taking out my overflow tank and emptying It out I determained that In order to fill up the overflow tank to FULL you need to stop at 22oz, 2 2/3 cups, 650ml, whatever. This unit sold by Moroso has a max capacity of 1 quart which amounts to 32 ounces leaving you with 10 ozs to spare. In my case, relocate to allow my Intercooler to breathe abit easier.

Long story short - this aftermarket unit Is a perfect canidate to replace/relocate the stock one.

Well, I went ahead and ordered this Moroso unit. At a later time I will do a pictorial write-up with pics.

Don't forget to order this when getting the Moroso overflow tank.
