theyre gonna be real uncomfy probably. maybe have some weak stitching. but i dont see how they could be a safety issue.

In reality, you can't predict someone rear-ending your car.
I'd like to see these cheap knock-off's handle a 50mph (differential) rear end collision without failing.
If the seat fails, you'll usually end up with head trauma and / or spinal injury.

This has nothing to do with racing or speed.

Ted,

I am no trying to be on your case, BUT, are you assuming that they WILL fail, or you have seen them fail?

It's been stated that the OEM seats do fail too under daily driven conditions. Again, I would like to see a good perspective on this, not a somebody said....

Christ,

Get off the case, he's not using the car to race. It looks to be daily street driven; if anything those knock off seats are safe as stock seats.

If you're really that concern why don't you send him a real racing seat, other wise just back off. You already informed him what the dangers are, its up to him to decide if he wants to continue using them or sell them.

So take your hands and put them under your ***. Then sip a cup of STFU.

I've seen cheap seats fail - not necessarily those seats in particular.

So it looks like it comes down to who can prove the other wrong?

Like I said before: "You get what you pay for."

Sorry, I'm not going to waste my money and test my life to prove this theory.

Wow, you are so eloquent...

I guess I can put you in the crowd of I-don't-give-a-****-go-kill-yourself crowd eh?

WTF is your problem?
I didn't say I wanted to send him a seat; I gave options outside of those $199 knock-off's.
I think you need to get whatever crawled up your *** and get some relief.
Might I recommend some Preperation H?

It's "consumers" like you who cause hard-working companies to fold due to some China / Taiwan / Phillipines / other 3rd world SE Asian country who can undercut profit margins by selling cheap-*** knock-off's.
I hope you're happy that SSR went backrupt cause you can't afford the good ****...

you can be killed anytime anywhere, you really think the stock seats will prevent you from breaking your back if you get rearended hard enough? even race seats won't save your life if you get hit hard enough...

stock seats are not exactly great protection, good race seats are better but still not foolproof.

my question is again...Are these ebay seats as safe as stock seats? Because if they are, then I see no disadvantage to getting them. Unless you want to start saying that anyone who keeps their stock seats and doesn't get real racing seats is just asking to die or something.

The factory seats passed federal crash tests in several different countries. You need to ask the manufacturer about any testing of the cheapie seats unless you notice a DOT or FIA certification sticker on them. I would imagine that the cheapie seats never passed any safety inspections.

skidpad: .83g
600ft slalom: 58.95mph

I'd say that's at best, mediocre, even for the late 80's/early '90's
Don't get me wrong, I love the 'verts, but for different reasons then lightness, nimbleness and quick accel.

**edit - okay, those numbers are for an automatic, but still..
Let's compare a 5 speed s-4 convertible againest others from it's time. Knock off at least 2 seconds from the 0-60. Again, compare those handling numbers to other cars in the 80's, don't forget excellent brakes, independent suspension and 50/50 balance. What had better handling and performance for the price in 1988?
