I'd guess Canadian figures, and assume i'm 98% sure. (EDIT: They're nearly at par right now anyway, I think we're slightly above)

I would highly recommend getting the 10ae if your not going to mess with it. If you plan on it, pm me his info

They are pretty much the same, at the moment. The Canadian dollar is worth about $1.02 US.

Wow, the S5 is nice, I didn't think it was that nice. If you really want the S5, I'd maybe point out the nitpicky things. The window trim needs replacing. How are the rubber trim pieces around the taillights? Minor things that in my mind should be perfect for a TII to command that kind of price. If he's that unwilling to budge, I'd say the 10th AE is a good buy. It certainly looks pristine. The S5 would probably be fun to mod just a little further.

Its pretty good, except for that window seal, there is paint bubble around both rear wheel well lips, and some paint bubble under the RX7 logo on the back. The wiper switch only works on low, and the drivers side window switch needs replacing. But its not worth $7300.

Agreed. Window seal is easy to replace but the other rust spots as noted are not fun. No rust on the 10AE? Normally I say get the S5, but that 10AE is an excellent piece.

RX7s without rust rarely come up for sale in Canada. Its a very nasty car environment.

Agreed. I am told he is a very well-off guy, so I don't think he really needs to sell the car. He has quite a collection of vehicles, including an FD.

I just don't understand the "keep it original" stuff. Why? Buy the car you want and do what you want to it. What does keeping a car original do for it? I bought my 10th AE that was in almost original shape and modded it to my enjoyment. Is it any less rare or any less reliable... Hell no. I say buy the 10th AE and enjoy the hell out of it!

how to routinely check air conditioner

IP Winsor: I hope that you don't mind my jumping onto this thread, but I'm doing so because of your picture of the engine bay of your '88 10th Anniversary Turbo II. I have one, also, and have looked throughout my owners' manual and my workshop manual, neither of which say a darn thing about how to routinely check my air conditioner.

Referring to your picture of your engine bay, I'm wondering if the small clear round plastic window is the check-window for the air conditioner refrigerant level. This "window" is located in the front passenger-side, between the radiator & the white plastic engine coolant overflow bottle, and between the passenger-side headlight and that same white plastic engine coolant overflow bottle. The window is surrounded by a black plastic envelope (or shield). It would be checked by looking down on it from above. If it is indeed for checking the air conditioner refrigerant level, Is it supposed to glow when the refrigerant is low? Thanks for any info.

Jim: I don't own the car (yet), so I am not able to answer the question. But I am sure there is expertise in this thread that can.

If there is that many rust bubbles, its rusty. More rusty than you think.

He could do whatever he wants if he buys the car. It's just nice to see cars that made it that long in original condition with relatively low miles stay original and clean and only get driven on weekends. The question asked in the topic title was "How collectible is a 1988 10th AE?" If these cars ever do become collectible, the original examples will be the ones people want to buy, not the modded ones. Modded cars tend to be more a reflection of the tastes and wishes of the owner who modded them, and those tastes can differ wildly from one person to the next.

I think the issue is it will never be as rare as a GTUs, but I don't think those will have the draw. 30 years from now you might make your money back. Until them who knows.

I purchased one exactly like the one you are looking at for $3000. By the time I get the few body problems fixed, painted, the brakes fixed, and seats fixed I will have a lot more than $7k in it. Now I wish I had searched further.

I hear that. I have seen more than a few $3k to $4k T2s, but I would need to sink $3k into them to put them on the road. Not much of a bargain in the end.

Drove the 10AE today. Its smooth and flawless. It looks like a million bucks out in the sunlight in the driveway. Rides and feels just right; tight and responsive. Discovered the AC doesn't work; this was news to the owner.

Offered him $7k; he wants $7500. I could probably work him over a bit and get it for $7250 because of the non-working AC. Its not a big gap to close. We have each others phone numbers; its not going anywhere.

I am thinking of travelling to Ottawa (5 hours drive) next Saturday to see 2 other cars:

- an 89 vert with a S4 T2 motor in it. Seems to have been done by someone who knew what they were doing, as it has an Microtech computer managing the engine, and a wideband gauge in a pilar pod. The dealer selling it has some knowledge of the cars history and is aware that the motor is a rebuild and its probably ported. Asking $5k.

- an 87 T2 that has lots of good quality "go fast" and appearance parts, a rebuilt motor with 40k miles on it. The seller is motivated (bills) and has service history back to 1990. Asking $4500 (was $5500).

See what happens next. All this test driving is fun!
