Opinions..custom headlight thing...

I got to visiting with a local here who works with textiles in custom applications...carbon fiber, kevlar, fiberglass, plastics, etc. He was discussing a project that had come to them enough times that they're taking it on. It'll be a dual 4.5" headlight housing that's cast into a 7" sealed beam mold. The lights will be placed diagonally. They'll use 9005/6 bulbs and the fixtures will be DOT approved. Applications are HUGE! How many cars, including the RX-7, used the 7" lights? Light will be better and you'll have a dual beam, which will make HID conversions so much easier. He says the estimated cost will be $280 for a pair.

What do people think?

I think that without pics and hard details I don't think anything.

No offense, but lots of people have talked about custom parts- and headlights seem to be a favorite- but few have done much about it.

I'd like to see some pics. $280 seems fairly reasonable depending one quality/demand etc.

Definitely want to see pics, or at least some table napkin sketches.

I've got a couple of sketches at home...I'll load them up in a few hours. Very simple pics...said he was going to get me some 3D design images but haven't recieved them yet. They don't look like anything real special, but I think they'll still be a drastic improvement.

Well it's a let down, but we got around to taking some measurements and it's not going to work. There's not enough room in a 7" light to get both fixtures in. There are smaller ones out there that would work but they're not really legal...or really "good"...little more than fog lights. We looked at a couple of projector housings that would save enough room...but would REQUIRE high intensity discharge lighting. Because of depth they would only fit in the center, though, and that killed the chance of a halogen high beam. They have a by-xenon housing that would work, but who here thinks a $1500 set of headlights, no matter how good they work? Most of us bought our cars for less.

I still get to play with the lights, though...I don't know where I'm going to put them but I got a set of 4.5" Hella lights. I may have to trim my bumper a bit and go flush.
