"Levels of sound with inserts:
1. lowest sound leverl- no insert what so ever (very quiet whoosh sound)
2. Two stage sound- pruple insert; it creates a whosh for low vent levels that transitions to a whistle once the main valve opens (i have this one)
3. Moderate whistle sound -the stock silver insert. it makes the whistle sound almost always
4. High whistle sound- gold insert"

found that info from a Dealer on a wrx forum. the purple one i have wooshes up to bout maybe 6 or 7 psi, then whistles for higher boost. but for some reason the bov on my car is quiet compared to the other cars like 240s. maybe its cuz i have the Tmic still and its on a small hose going to the bov compared to a 2.5" pipe. idk.

Purple is a whoosh not a whistle... but turbo flutter can be heard on some applications with this insert as it isn't very loud. Silver and gold are three fin inserts s they both whistle

I have the HKS SSQV. I like how it sounds. It has that unique whistle to it. The only other BOV i would want is the Greddy Type S. I hate the Blitz and Turbo XS bovs. But hey everyone has opinions.

I have the gold insert in my AE. It chirps at low boost and whistles at high boost. It was neat for the first 30 seconds I had it, now I want something a little quieter. I'm thinking about trying the BOV w/o an insert....

The purple insert is the one that is the deepest tone and takes out the whistle,or you can just take out the insert altogether as you mentioned.

Both inserts came with it when I bought it and I just used the gold one because I don't like purple.

With a bigger turbo than stock and more airflow the BOV sounds really really good. I currently don't have a sound clip myself, but trust me its awesome.

personally i like mine now that it decided to work normally one day. i like that screeching sound it makes when it blows off at higher boost levels, reminds me of the video clip from 'getaway in stockholm'.

the fluttering sound(light compressor surge) is unavoidable i believe, it is venting very well but still flutters under light boosting.. the recirculating system would just shroud the sound so you wouldn't hear it.
