OMP questions, and a small piece of advise...
first, the questions:
1) how do you know if your OMP is bad? Mine is an 87T2 (mechanical OMP). Is this devise prone to failure?
2) there is an oil leak around this area. Nothing major, but I like to take care of it. Is there a seal in this area that is prone to failure? Looking at Mazdatrix, there are 2 parts that may be the source of my problem. First, there is the metering pump "o" ring pn 14-6040-N236. This sits between the engine and the OMP. The second part is a gasket called "Copper 5-Hole" pn 14-602A-N236. I have no clue where this goes; any input?? And which one typically goes bad?
3) are there any tricks to replacing OMP/gasket? Seems like there is no room there!!! Should I remove the fan and fan shroud?
here is the hint for you. I do not have a mod TB, so I have to live with the pain of taking off/putting back on the small water hose from the engine to the TB. The painful part is the metal clip - because of the angle and location, you can not easily get a vise grip in there to pull the band open. But here is what you do - go buy a channel lock - it is a tool with a 90 deg head and is made for stuff like this. Made my life a whole lot easier!
Thanks!

Re: OMP questions, and a small piece of advise...
I don't have all the answers, but I can offer some advice, as I've been toying with my OMP (89 GXL) since I have a leak overe there too (what a PAIN).
The O-ring goes in between the enigne and the OMP, and the copper one goes in between the OMP and the OMP injector lines. You might as well get this gasket too, unless you are very sure that the leak is not coming from there. I replaced my O-ring, and it didn't solve my leak. I think there is a leak in mine between the two parts (one metal, one plastic) of my OMP itself. I have yet to really find out (it's too cold here for me to work on my car, so I'm carless).
YES, removing the fan helps a lot. Getting under the car and going around my suspesion worked well for me, but somethign tells me that your downpipe/turbo will be in your way for that, but I'm not sure. I had a tendedncy to dent up my radiator when unbolting my OMP. Oh, and replace the bolts when you remove them...mine SNAPPED when I went to tighten them back on again. That was almost a horrible situation (but I got the bastard out). Good luck.
