Could you circle or mark it?

If it an aluminum that has a pin sticking out on the front of the cover, if so it's the timing mark.

That little tab sticking out, off of the front cover facing the rear of the engine?

That pic is prob. one of the funniest things in a while. I would say alignment pin. Why are you trying to take it out? maybe try lightly heating the cover to release it, but be careful, not to warp or distort the cover.

Yeah, it looks like one of the alignment pics, and you shouldn't have to take it out. It helps get the front cover in the right place when you put it back on.

B is what Sideways said. A locting dowel pin for the front cover. Helps align the cover on install so the oil feed hole for the OMP will not be blocked......and other reasons.

Why would anybody leave the cas installed in the front cover? Odd.

B, the pin was to thick for the hole that it was suppost to , my front iron was replaced, and im suspecting that it was from a different model...i sanded it down a bit so that it slid in perfect, the only problem is that the tip of it got very weak and started to colapse a bit. just the very tip tho. there was still plenty of pin left that slid into the hole.

Huh? It should be the same size for all FC engines regardless of year.

That little straw deal above the big dowelpin hole? That's not stock...someone has put that there as a modification. There's oil flowing through that passage, if you follow the pathway it leads to the cas OMP drive. It needs to have oil flowing through it. Sometimes people use sealant instead of a gasket on the 88 and earlier engines (since mazda usually gives you the wrong gasket with the rebuild kits) and this little straw keeps you from plugging that small hole unintentionally with sealant.

I've never seen an engine with that, and there's no need for it, so I'd remove it.

from the iron to the cover. Being that no part on the front cover can generate oil pressure

alright now when you say flowing threw the oil pump, do you mean providing it with the nessesary oil to inject into the engine? or just to run threw the gears.

See on the inside of your front cover, there is a gear and a shaft? Yeah, that needs lubricated somehow. Sure, theres oil splashing around inside the front cover, but not enough to lube that shaft reliably, so it gets pumped there. Also, the OMP has to get its oil supply from somewhere, so oil is pumped to it as well. If you look at the front cover, you'll see what looks like a "vein" and if you follow it, you'll clearly see where it leads.
