Do S4s even retain codes in the ECU?

No, the series four does not retain codes. It has no memory atall. Put your light assy on and turn the key to on. Pull the tps plug off or the boost sensor plug off. You will get codes. Darn, I don't remember if the engine has to be running or not, right now.

Engine ABSOLUTELY has to be running. And it needs to be running for a few minuites (IE fully warmed up). Then you should start generating codes if any. I seriously doubt that the ECU is going to flag anything if your only symptom is hesitation. Sounds like an injector/ground problem.
