Question Oil Thermo (Temp) Sender, Can't Find Replacement

I'm just about finished building the new engine for my s4 TII. But before pouring in the oil, I have a small problem. The OTS is missing the wire. It broke off the side of the oil pan while the engine was on the stand. I spent about an hour pining over the FSM and parts fiche, but can't find a listing anywhere. The local Mazda dealer had the same result. Does anyone here know what the part number is for this thing?

Thanks,

If that is on the oil pan it is listed as a Oil Level sensor.

6600b-1 ..page 616 (illustration page 614 Parts manual S4 86-87 Mazda parts Catalog)

Oil level sensor,Part#N326-10-470

The pressure sensor( side of engine, bell looking thing) is:
Part #N201-14-820

Nope Dave. It's neither the level or pressure sensor. It is the oil temp sensor located adjacent to the level sensor on the left side of the pan. It's a brass, thread in temp sensor....similar to the coolant temp sensor in design. It's used by the ECU for raising the RPMs during cold start.

The only refference I found in the 88 FSM was in the Lubrication System section....pages 2-8 through 2-10 regarding the removal and installation of the oil pan. You can plainly see two leads coming off the oil pan next to the drain plug. One is the oil level sensor and the other is the oil thermo unit (#4 in the diagram on page 2-8). That's the only mention of this damn thing I can find.

If it is a thread in sensor next to the oil level sensor as seen on oil pan: 10-400E-N326
then it is for sub zero start assist.

Basically the oil sensor is what grounds the sub zero start assist pump after it is energized by the key.

Since Mazda issued a TSB to ditch the entire system in 1990 because it is ineffective, I don't know if you're going to find parts for it or not.

My vote would be to buy a brass plug for it and call it a day.

I've seen that sender in the FSM illustrations, this is the first I've heard of someone having one....and now I understand why. If you are going to delete it and don't want to mess with putting a plug in there, I've got a spare oil pan that does not have that port. I'll send it to you dirt cheap to help out and lessen my "parts, i'll never need but too much of a pack rat to throw out" pile. I believe I removed the oil level sender off that oil pan so you'd have to swap your's on. But literally, toss me like $5 for getting a box and gas to the PO, you pay shipping and it's yours.

Thanks Dave....I may give Ray a call.

From my interpretation, I thought it was a seperate system from the sub zero start assist. It is what raises the idle RPM's untill the engine comes up to temp.
I have.....*checks supply*.....5 s4 engines and all of them have the oil temp sensor. Unfortunatly, any of my parts motors either are missing the wire or the wire is hanging on by a few strands of copper.....not worth swapping over.
The s5 engines didn't have this sensor and as such, the oil pans don't have the threaded bung.

Thanks for the offer Jeff. I have a s5 pan I could swap onto my motor, but I would rather keep everything stock on this build. And if this sensor is responsible for the excellerated warm up, that would be nice to retain as well.

My 89 N/a motor and 90 tII had the sub zero start on the pan. Interesting that all of your motors have "federal" emissions packages.

Is this how your oil pan looks?:

Sorry for the small picture but it's from Mazdatrix, but the threaded hole is obvious.

break the wire off and leave it, sleep at night knowing it does nothing for your car.

mazda already put out a TSB to eliminate the sub zero assist system as it is worthless. in fact, save a few lbs and remove the rest of the system while you're at it.
