Ok, so the magic question now is if I have no sprung cap on the radiator (see the pic, no provision for one) then how has my overflow system been working and is the cooling system pressurizing? I've been driving this way with this radiator/overflow setup for years and years.

So if the filler neck has a fitting going into a hose, you SHOULD use a sprung cap.

If the filler neck has NO bypass fitting / hose, you can use the plain / unsprung cap.
You can use the sprung cap in this case, but it's a waste of money.

If your car is like that pic, you can use a plain / unsprung cap.
You can use a sprung cap if you want.

Sorry about not replying ASAP - I just started a new job, so my reponses are not going to be ultra quick like before.

Yes Ted, that engine bay is mine So, if I don't have a rad cap on the radiator (obviously I don't) and the filler neck on the t-stat housing has no overflow hose (obviously it doesn't) then how has my system been pressurizing? As I said, I've been running this way for years. I just wanna know hehe

Good question!

I can't see all the details in your set-up, so I can't give you a good answer.
Maybe there's some kinda pressure relief valve on the fitting on top of the rad?

Thanks Karack...I'll check for that. I assume that to be the case since I've driven like this for years without any problems...zero overheating. I'd also assume that the shop that did my motor swap would have mentioned if something was wrong (an RX-7 specialty shop in my area, www.smokinjoeracing.net).

Do you know what years/models predominantly had this setup and why? I'd be interested to know.

Ted, thanks for your response as well!!

dunno, i have seen so many variances and i can't find a rhyme or reason as to why they had so many different setups, for the most part though most of the N/As that i have seen had your style of setup with a pressure cap next to the RF headlight and a radiator with only a overflow nipple in the center with the coolant level sensor.

my '87 T2 has a rebuilt radiator with a pressure cap port right next to where your coolant level sensor is, maybe my setup is abnormal, i don't know but i do know that there has to be a pressure limiting device and yours should be next to the headlight, it is probably just covered by the aluminum shroud.
