o2 sensor problems
o2 sensor problems
hi there, my 88gxl has about 137k on it and i believe that it has the original o2 sensor. so the last time i filled up, i calculated my MPG and got a hearty 12.5. someone told me that a new o2 sensor would help that and i wanted to get your opinions on it before i went out and got one. thanks for your help-Dan
How hard were you driving? 12.5mpg would be about right for some high RPM fun, a bit low for city driving, and absolutely disgusting for highway driving (below what no O2 sensor should cause).
I just used a generic $20 replacement from Autozone or some such place.

O2 sensor comes into play in closed loop mode, i.e. cruising at a steady rate. You can replace it, but don't expect great improvement in mileage, chances are the problem lies elsewhere.
If you do a lot of open highway driving, the O2 sensor might mak a difference. On my old '91 N/A, the exhaust actually turned my rear bumper black. Changed the O2 sensor (generic one I bought at Advance Auto for ~$20) and problem was solved. But as for mileage improvement, not that great. I was getting 23 before and improved to maybe 24.2 after.

well, of corse im hanging out in the high RPM's, it is a rotary engine. the mileage is based on a tank of only city driving. also, i was wondering what kind of mileage a turbo II got? just wondering.
