O2 sensor error

I am getting an O2 error at while idle. What does this mean. It is a 87 GXL if it matters.

Im pretty sure that you're not supposed to pull codes while the car is running. Correct me if I am wrong, its been awhile since Ive done it.

I think it is a new O2. If not then can that be the problem.
