And now, a question about the Auto Tranny.

Hello again, as I have stated in the past, I have an 89 'Vert automatic. The tranny is a piece, so let me tell you what it's doing and if you can, suggest what you think could be wrong.

First off, until the car gets warmed up, it has serious problems selecting a gear, and in reverse, the car will barely move. Imagine if you were reversing a manual car and every 5 seconds you let the clutch grab to about 50% then let out again. It takes FOREVER to get anywhere in reverse.

In drive, it wont shift by itself until about 6k, unless I let off the gas, then it upshifts...however under even the slightest acceleration, it over revs, then grabs the next lowest gear.

To put it plainly, I'm very pissed off at this tranny. Now, let me give you some background, and I'll be done.

When I bought the car, the guy said it was leaking tranny fluid like crazy, and he was right. It would leak the entire contents of the tranny in a few hours, just sitting. I found the problem (a tranny cooler hose was loose lol) and fixed it, however it acts up badly now. Could he have burned up the tranny by driving it like that, or could my filter just be very bad, or what?

There is also a reciept in the glove box for a torque converter rebuild dated about 6 months before I bought the car (about a year ago)

Sorry for the long post, but I hate it when people say "my tranny acts weird, what' wrong?". I wanted to be thorough.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Might still have a warranty

and the loose hose might be because of a goof by the tranny shop it was in. Most tranny shops cover their work with a 6 mo. to 1 year warranty. The real issue is most warranty work is exclusive to the owner at the time.

Soooo, if you have any kind of relationship with the previous owner, go back to the shop with him/her in tow acting as the owner and ask them to fix the problem. Tell them the story about how the tranny was loosing fluid shortly after he got the car back from them and that you, his/her friend, found the loose hose. But, it's still not acting right so need them to check it out.

At best even if you're out of warranty, if they're a reputible shop, they may very well repair it for the cost of parts and waive labor. And labor is usually the biggest cost item in a tranny rebuild.

At the worst, you'll get a professional answer to your question.

To me, it sounds like you have burned up clutch's from running without fluid.
