Noob suspension question

Is there a difference between s4 and s5 suspension? I have 86 GXL and my front right is rusted. I know someone with OEM s5 suspensions. And what should I pay him for the front pair?

TY

They are interchangeable.
I wouldn't pay anything for a 20 year old set of struts.

Does your car have a normal/sport mode switch for suspension as the GXL's have? If so, they aren't the same.

Go look on ebay. Buy yourself some used coilovers. Don't waste your money with struts + springs. Save yourself the extra 400 + get something good. You'll love them. Trust me.

you can get new struts for like $50 a piece... the OEM units are probably way blown out by now, if you really need them I would give him maybe $20?

since you have the AAS i would recommend getting coilovers(aas does very little its a miracle my system still works), and no they are not interchangeable(if his S5 doesnt have AAS). also if your going to get coilovers and have the cash do all four, i would recommend
high end - JIC MAGIC
mid high range - A'PEXI
street - tein, eibach, racing beat
resolve for now - kyb, and any other pep boys brand
ive tried the a'pexi and they rock for a more than "spirited"driver
street coilovers are nice for regular driving and "spirited"driving
and the only time ive been in a car with jic had 500 horsepower and hell if anyone could tell the diffrence, but if you only need a resolve get rid of the AAS its just dead weight. really depends on what your looking for .
the lower the ride the better hadling (to a certain point though) and a regular , or higher stace will give you a better ride comfort but the suspension will feel less responsive. go to your local raceshop and speak to them they are there to help.
Luck'

They are interchangeable, since just like if you bought aftermarket pieces, you'd simply remove the AAS actuators and no longer have AAS. But as other posters have noted, 20 year old struts aren't a great bet, and checking their condition off the vehicle (for that matter, even on) is difficult, so unless you're seriously short of money or in need of something right now, you'd be better buying even relatively inexpensive OEM style non-adjustables like Tokico Blues or KYB GR2 - don't go so cheap you get Monroe Crapmatic or parts store branded pieces (which are often re-branded Crapmatics)

ok im guessing your short on cash so i would check them first if they are no good (probably arent) go shop around the forum there might be lightly used ones for cheap.
if i were you i would start saving if ur spring is rusted the rest of the suspension is probably on its way to the j/y.
invest in a bushing kit some good coilovers , oh and yes they are interchangeable i always thought the bolts were more seperated on the AAS, but they are not.
good luck
