Question noise happening when clutch is engaged

When ever I let off the clutch on my 86 rx7 gxl there is a knocking noise coming from the clutch or flywheel. It can't be the tranny because i just put in a s5 tranny. Please help

With the clutch depressed (pushed in) you get no noise?

I'm going to assume it does this while in all/no gears.

it also does it when the car is still, but with the clutch out. the noise is like if a shaft is just boncing around inside the tranny.

I removed the tranny and put in the new one thinking this would solve the problem, but it didnt. I looked at the PP and moved the flywheel around, but it all seemed solid. This weekend I plan to just rip it all apart agian.

if any has had a simlar problem, plz let me know. this noise is VERY annoying.

I've never heard of the pilot bearing making a "knocking" sound, but did you check that too?

only other thing I can think of that makes a clunking sound would be that diff. mount, or maybe the tranny mount(s)

Neither of which should be shaking or moving if the clutch is pressed against the flywheel and the input shaft is turning...that's just in neutral.

How many miles on the engine? Sometimes a knocking sound can be oil starvation to the staionary gear bearings.( main bearings) You can just drop the oil out of your pan and see if there are any shavings in the oil. If so that's no good.

Did you change the front counterweight when you put the S5 tranny on?

it can't be the bearing because it would happen all the time not just when the clutch isn't pushed in.

Steady rythmic knocking of irregular?

What about when you're moving- is 4th quieter than 3rd or 5th?

its the same in every gear including nuetral. The noise gets quieter or louder as u give it more or less gas.

How much play was in the input shaft of the transmission?

I'm guessing the clutch/PP was making no noises like this prior to the tranny swap?

If I'm reading this right - it's quiet when the clutch is depressed - irregular rattle when the clutch is released (neutral & all gears).

Maybe check for a loose or missing throwout bearing retainer spring?

reason for tranny swap is because we thought it was the tranny making the noise.

corret.

I dont think this could be it, because we swaped trannsmissions. I am pretty sure that its not the tranny, or any type of bearing. This noise is abnormally loud. It sounds like 2 peices of metal are clapping together, as if the FW was lose an slapping against the motor while turning. But its not, its something else.

ok I have an update.

Tonight I took off the tranny again. Removed the pp and clutch, everything was fine with this. Once I got to the flywheel, there was trouble. The flywheel nut was lose. I was able to pull off the nut with just the rench. The fly nut should be 360'lb. That means I should have to use a bar to get that thing off, but I didnt.

A friend of mine says that alot of the older rx7s have a very heavy flywheel, which causes the nut to come loose.

So we retightened the flywheel much more. I will let you know what happens once we finish putting everything back and running.

Check for excessive eccentric shaft end play while you have it apart. Hopefully it will be just a loose flywheel nut, put pushing the clutch in will put pressure on the flywheel/"e" shaft and move the assembly forward. Hopefully it's just a loose flywheel nut.

We just finished putting everything back on. After starting it it doesn't make the noise nemore so it was just a loose flywheel nut
