Noise, Clutch related?
Hey guys, I have been noticing a small ping type noise when I release the clutch. It makes the noise when its almost all the way out. Strange thing is; it doesnt do it all the time and has never made the noise while down shifting, or reverse. Up shifts only, and only in first and second gear (mostly 1st). Clutch has maybe 600 miles on it and works perfect; grips fine, no hesitation. Once again the noise is a metal on metal, but not at all grinding. it sounds like hitting a spoon against a metal fence post, and seems to be coming from the clutch plate area. Trans was new in 03, mesh still intact, no problems there either. At a loss, anyone please.

I've been searching around and found another thread about drive shafts that included this info,
If the u joints are bad they will wobble and cause a ping noise or a clunk when releasing the clutch , and will also vibarate a speeds and will make noise alot if they are really bad it will explode and drop the shaft on the ground.
Hate to bring this up again, but the local mechanic I spoke with didnt mention U-Joints. Anyone have any ideas? I trust the forums more than piston mechanics. I know this isnt a rotary specific question, but I need this favor.

did you replace the Pilot Bearing when you did the Clutch install?..My "theory" is that the Transmission's Input shaft is Wobbling and the Throw out bearing may be Hitting the Pressure plates Splines when engaging...Does that Sound Feasable?

Well, I didnt replace the clutch myself, however the pilot bearing, and throwout bearing were in the kit when I gave it to the shop. Whether they actually replaced it, I dont know. I know sometimes shops will re-use the old bearings if they arnt busted in order to keep the new parts. I'll present your theory when I take it back to the shop that did the work. Hopefully its something they will fix. At least at a discount considering I have only put 650 miles on it. By the way, I have never dumped the clutch, or even pushed it beyond normal driving conditions. very feasable.

Oh God NO!..unless you actually Saw them replace that Pilot bearing then that May be the Culprit..I know,by Experience, the damn thing is sometimes Hard to get out,and if they were workin on a Timeline, you can bet your Coffee and Donut that they would Bypass it,say it's fine and throw the clutch on anyways.>.just Tell them that the job was not Done Correctly, and If they Start giving you excuses then ask them if they would like some influence from a member of the Better Business bureau...also get a Card..from a Lawyer..it doesn't matter if he is yours or NOT..hand it to him and say that HE(the lawyer will Be Contacting the shop before the End of the day to Discuss whether or not the Station intends either to rectify the problem or Have a Day in Court,Missing Valuable Booking time for other customers..Chances are If they did Something wrong, then they will Do the right thing Quickly to avoid Negative "press' as they say.
